My TriGlide is a 2009....Today when I opened it to put my luggage in..I noticed one hinge had come loose when I looked closer I saw a big crack in the tourpak.....no marks or scratches just a big...deep crack...I m not rough on it and am very careful....anyone ever have this happen? Going to be a big expense

Hey trikermary, I,m on my third tour pak lid on my 2009. One was stress fractures around the hinge. Put the bigger hinges and a new lid tether. Cost was covered by the Dealer. Got lucky and had a really good Service Manager. Next time tether broke and cracked lid hinges, they put new lid on through extended warranty.
The last time wife was opening it and the wind caught it broke the tether and hinges right off the lid. They covered it under extended warranty. I really consider myself lucky. The second time was with a retractable tether.
I have a folding hinge on my tour pak now. I really like it. the only thing is the lid doesn't open as wide as before. Good luck.

Sorry to hear this Mary. Just got the base of my Yamaha RSV trunk replaced under warranty. Cost of that part is several hundred dollars. :AGGHH:

So far I haven't had that problem. I don't remember which forum I read about a "backup" for the old retractable tether. Someone installed a small screen door chain as a backup. I did it to mine and I just did it to my '14 TG tourpac. A little more difficult then the older brackets, but I got it to work. I made it so the lid doesn't go back nearly as far at the original. If you have the luggage rack and something on it, I can see it putting way too much pressure on the hinges. That rack is really heavy. I feel a lot more secure with the chain setup now knowing it will never break. ThumbUp:D

Mary, sorry to hear your run of bad luck. Never had one crack, I have had the cable replaced after it wearing to only a couple of strands left.

Hey Gary, can you post a pic of how you attached the chain to the '14? Sure would appreciate it.

can the tour pack be beefed up around the crack with gel coat or fiberglass repair?

As soon as I get my bike back from the dealer. It's in for the 5K service and to have the tether replaced. Don't know if anyone else has this problem, but one of the tabs in the lower tether bracket was broke where the screws attach to. Covered under warranty. I fabricated a thin piece of aluminum that sandwiches between that bracket and the trunk wall.

You folks that got tour lid replaced, etc. under Extended Warranty were lucky. When my '09 TG lid cracked because retractable tether broke, EW wouldn't cover it...said I overloaded the luggage rack. Cost was $465 for new lid and $265 for installation of lock, etc. I also had the chrome hinges on the tour pak. After lid was replaced/installed, the bottom of tour pak developed a crack around the hinge. Cost was $300 for local paint shop to reinforce corner w/fiberglass, paint. Those retractable tethers are a piece of $hit.

I think the 2014's lid goes waaaay to far over center and with the extra heavy luggage rack on it, it really puts a strain on those hinges. Instead of adding the chain as a back up, I think I will remove the retractable tether off completely and just leave the chain for support. The tether really isn't doing anything anyway since I have the chain holding the lid less open.
