Well I finally got to playing around in my garage and my son and I made a tank lift for his 13 Road Glide and installed it. Well I kind of liked the way it
looked so we did the same on my Tri Glide. Left pic is before the lift and right pic is after.

Amazing how such a "small" change can make a big difference.

Have you been out riding with it yet? Lots of guys notice less buffeting because more air is going under the tank and across the engine, instead of over the tank and hitting them in the chest.

Do you think it helps with the heat and makes the ride cooler?

We have done quite a bit of testing on this. It reduces the cylinder head temps (taken with an IR gun) by 10-15 degrees after 30 or more minutes of interstate riding.

We have done no testing on if it makes the ride feel cooler for the rider or passenger.

I've been thinking of doing the same. I wonder how much that will change the fuel indication though.

On the '13's and lower it will change the already inaccurate fuel indicator, but it will be consistent, so it is easy to know what's going on after a few tanks.

From what I have seen on the 14's, HD seems to have finally come up with an accurate fuel gauge, and with the 1.5" tank lift with the deluxe option, it has not altered the indication at all.

Here's a thread with a lot more info on tank lifts-

It really didn't change the fuel gauge much but it wasn't hard to figure it out.

Went for a ride stopped for gas when the fuel gauge read empty and it said I had 32 miles left. It took 6.1 gallons of gas. So I had about a gallon left and about 32 miles. So it works for me. I know when I need gas.

Yes it did seam to make a little difference in the air flow. It did help.

Well I already solved the heat issue with mine back in 11 when I bought it so I can't really say. But it can't hurt.

Can you post a list of parts? I might see if I can get this done before our memorial ride this weekend. If not parts, then just a description of what you did.

BTW, I assume you meant 5.1 gallons instead of 6.1.

Ya 5.1 Gallons.
The parts we used we had in the garage.
The flat metal strip off a 2" U bolt clamp. 2 of them.
Reuse the stock front tank bolts for the bottom.
2 5/16's X 18 X 3/4
2 5/16's X 18 Lock nuts & flat washers. These are the top bolts.
Rear, Had some nylon bushings. Put 2 together on each side so they measure just under 9/16's of an inch.
Also need 5/16's X 18 bolts to replace the stock rear tank bolts. Can't remember the length they were but about a 1/2 inch or so longer than the stock ones.
After installing brush painted it all black to match the frame. You could spray paint the parts before install if you want to wait for the to dry.
Take the metal strip from the U bolt and the bottom hole on it mounts to the stock tank mount on the frame using the stock tank mount bolts.
The top hole on the strip mounts to the tab on the tank using the 5/16's X 18 X 3/4 bolts nuts and washers.
Take the rear tank bolts out set your bushings or spacers between the tank and frame and install the longer bolts.
The tank can move slightly back and fourth before all the bolts are tightened. Make sure you are not far enough forward the your bars will touch the tank at full lock both ways to be sure nothing will touch your tank. It shouldn't but just check to be sure.
Trust me Steve once you look at the parts and the tank mounts you will know exactly how to do it.

I see a lot of people doing that, but doesn't it interfere with any drink holder mounted to the handlebars? Mine already hits the gas cap when I turn the bars fully left or right.

I couldn't say. I have 13 inch bagger bars on mine so my drink holder don't get close to hitting anything.
