The size of my key knob on my trike

Howdy friends,
As some know from my posts, I am new to my 2012 TriGlide although I'm not new to riding motorcycles. I have been riding since I was very young and the bikes I rode were affordable used dirt bikes. Lots of good learning during those years on knobbies. But, as my income grew, so did my ability to have several street bikes and the ride continues. Bottom line, I love the open road, especially long distance road trips.

Now I have a new trike to add to my list of former bikes. I sold my '97 Heritage Springer in January of this year and sold the sidecar that was married to that ride. Again, loads of fun can be had on a sidecar rig. But, they are gone. I still have my '03 Ultra Classic and have been removing lots of the chrome and gadgets that made that bike a pleasure for me to ride. That Ultra has 100K miles while the Heritage Springer has somewhere between 60 - 70K on the clock. Like I said, I am much like so many on triketalk as far as the love to burn gas in the most enjoyable way, on two wheels and now on three wheels but different than the sidecar rig.

Anyway, as I have been changing over so many things from the Ultra to the Triglide I am amazed on how different just 9 years has changed the fitage between the two Harleys. I've slowed on the removeal of partson the Ultra a bit in the last several days, but today I managed to remove the chrome cover on the key knob that I had on my Ultra. It was still stuck on the knob pretty good and after finding the Harley package that held the chrome cover for the key knob from when I bought and installed it, back in '04 or maybe '05. Wow, the price was still on the package and the cost back then was $89.95. Shortly after I bought it I saw that it became obsolete.

So, I thought I'd be pretty luck to be a guy that still had that obsolete part right there for the whole world to see. But, believe or not, the key know has been changed in size. It still had the same shape but, although it fit on my '03 Ultra, it was to small for a proper fit on my '12 TriGlide. How or why that change took place is just simply beyond me. I'm not sure what year the change took place or if maybe more than once the key knob has been changed, that would explain why that chrome key knob cover became obsolete. I sort of liked the cover and will miss it, but I'm going to add it to the ever growing list of parts that I'm going to sell.

I thought the resizing was a bit strange and I'm not sure if the change is only on the TriGlide or all H-D bikes that have the same key knob.

So long for now,

All touring use the same ignition switch, the change took place for the 2006 MY.

Thanks msocko3,
I made identical post elsewhere too and you are not the only one to send me the answer to my question. It was 2006. Thanks

I am still surprised to see a need for a change like that. With my limited level of Harley understanding I would think, save the size and shape and scratch the plans and expenseces of retooling. I always leaned toward and practice, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Now, After all I'm not on Corp Level, I'm just the loyal idiot that buys one Harley after another. The problem is with me, if I would just buy a Harley more often than I do, I would have know the key knob cover wouldn't fit. lol shame on Me!

Yep ! - I have an '06 and I bought one of them nifty farkles on eBay for a great price.

Anyone wanna guess what I discovered when it arrived?

Ahh...planned obsolecence. Used to be parts on HD's would fit a few model generations back, but apparently the marketing department took over. Seems change is made for the sake of change, and it makes it expensive for the aftermarket to keep up, so a lot don't. That is forcing you to the dealership to get the add on stuff. Last years comfort and chrome parts won't fit this year's bike, so the MoFoCo can sell more farkles. At a premium price, of course. And if you have an older bike, (my Harley is a '90 - 3 more years until it is considered an antique) the choices are even more limited.

I was at the dealer yesterday and they have a Screamin Eagle Ultra-Classic on the floor. What a trike that would make, but that's a different story!

What I noticed about the ignition switch was how tall it is; it's huge! I mean, in comparison to the switch that's on my 2012 TriGlide, the one on this Screamin Eagle bike towers above the switch panel. It must have been about 3 inches tall.

When I asked the salesman about the switch and why it was so big, he had no idea.
