What needs to be removed?

I have a 2008 Goldwing w/California sidecar conversion kit (Cobra). My question is how much of the fairing do I need to remove to change the oil. This is my first trike. Thanks in advance,,,

You should not have to remove (fairing) to change the the filter. There is an oil filter wrench that will remove the filter with removing the fairing.

U'll eventually need a manual if plan to do any maintenance which i would recommend for you.. <br />
unless u personally kn your dealer and tech,, u will have to check on what they do for you. I have abt given up on dealer work unless its under warranty and then i have to do a follow up on the things they do.

You may be rite I do not have a belly pan And after looking yours is an 1800 so there may be some difference there. On mine I bought this little oil filter wrench (bout 9.00) I think and I don't have to remove anything. Good Luck

</div>You should be able to remove the piece on the front of the bellypan which will allow you access to the oil drain plug and also the oil filter. Simple The only two belly pans I've seen have the removable front piece. It's duck soup!<img src="images/smilies/thumbup.gif" border="0" alt="" title="ThumbUp" class="inlineimg" />

No plastic needs to be removed at all to change oil on a Wing. If you do, you are either listening to the wrong folks or doing more than you need to. Oil changes on Wing are a piece of cake, especially when compared to what I have to go through to change oil on my Harley. It can almost be accomplished in dress clothes without getting dirty.

On a 1500 you have to remove the side cover to get to the oil filler cap as I recall. The side cover is plastic... Here are the instructions for removing the side cover:

Same as on an 1800, but then it gets compicated.

Actually, on my 1800 the cover is a lot harder to get back on than it was when we had the 1500. I'd almost rather have some visible fasteners than Mother Honda's array of slots, tabs, breakable posts and rubber grommets that wear out.

A word to the wise. Make sure you check the rubber grommets that hold the cover on. The cover should snap in place. If the grommet is missing replace them. If they allow the cover to go on and come off easy repla e them. Ask me how much it cost me to repair and replace my cover on my 1500 with all the graphics after it blew off and got run over by a car. $350. I tried the fishing wire thing didn't work. I now have it bolted on.
They make a wrench for removing the filter on the 1500. You can use it and not have to remove any plastic. It is a flat piece of steel with a hole the shape of the oil filter.

The OIL FILTER WRENCH may not really be necessary: I had read elsewhere that only hand-tightening the filter is quite sufficient. I tried it (with arthritic hands) and after 8,000 miles, still zero leakage on my garage floor. Then for the acid test - removing it without a wrench (with arthritic hands) = NO PROBLEM!

It seems that all these years I've been over-tightening that filter and wasted money on the wrench.
