What if ?

What if you let a brand new motorcycle (low miles ) sit unused for 4 years. You took it out and cranked it over for a few min . Do u think this can damage it? Please give your possible reasons why you think yes or no!!!!

Supposedly it doesn't matter with a 4 stroke, or so I've been told over the years. I'm no mechanic though.

If gas was in it, and you have a carb on it, you're going to have problems.

</div>Well the proper way would of been to remove the spark plugs put a little oil in through the hole and hand turn the engine a couple of times through to lube the walls. then re-install the plugs and go from there. After sitting for 4 years the walls were surely dry. If a ring was stuck to the wall it might have broke when it was turned over by the starter on a dry wall. There is a possiblity that it survived.

If it was stuck solid it would have fried the tiny starter motor instantly.Do U think? When you rebuild a motor you bang the piston in from the top and run it through cycle to install the bearings, NEXT thought, The Wood chipper that I have 5 hp B$S sat for 4 years and it started up so did an old lawn mower a guy gave me . This bike only turned over maybe 3 dozen times

I agree that it should be ok, with the exception noted above about bad gas, and also possibly seals may have dried out, and may leak. You won't know that till it gets some hours back on it. I'd also do a careful inspection of tires, valve stems, fork seals, other rubber.

Yes John it could be just fine. But it could of also scratched the walls. You just do not know until you get it running and see how it runs.

If it's a Harley you need to check oil level. If there's nothing showing on the stick, it may have "sumped" -- drained all the oil from the tank down into the crankcase. Harleys run a dry sump system, so you'll need to pull the plugs & crank it over a while to get the oil back up in the tank. The newer touring bikes/trikes have the oil tank down under the transmission so they won't sump like the older bikes did. I don't know if that's still a problem with the newer Soft Tails & Dynas or not, nor do I know if other V Twins have the same system & problem.

It is basically a Honda Reflex scooter with a motorcycle body . Oil in the trans and the crank case. My Hondas build oil pressure on the starter motor (oil light goes out after 3rd rev of the starter motor.)

Take the Spark Plug out and use a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinder...crank it over with the plug out a few times, then reinstall the plug and start it. We have owned 2 Reflex Scooters.....tough built things includin' the engines...:wtg:
