You're bio said you're retired military, I did 25 years state law enforcement. I learned early on, if you folded under some ball busting you brought down a world of hurtin on yourself.
I got all done with the lube changes. On my warm-up ride I went to my dealer (Doc's HD) to get a derby cover gasket.
I figured I had never changed it and would be nice to my baby. They only sell it in a kit with the 3 drain plug "O" rings, which I don't need, as I bought a 10 pack from the hardware store. Doc's gives me a 10% discount on everything, so it was only $5.50
Back home, after pulling the plugs, I pulled the cover and the gasket looked great, then I remembered that it got replaced at the end of the year during the clutch recall. Oh well, now I have a spare & I got a cup of coffee out of the deal.:Coffee:
The drain plugs for the engine & tranny looked great, along with the Lucas oil, the primary plug & fluid looked nasty.
I guess it's the material from the clutch plates.
They had all the new colors on the showroom floor & I like that denim red.
They also had a used 2017 (black) with 725 miles marked down to $21,000
Overall, a fun day, but storms are coming tomorrow, so I will have to wait till Saturday for a test ride.orag:
one other thing, I could never see the Lucas on the tranny dipstick, it was hard to read...That is not a problem with the Redline.![]()

Jack, The Redline Shockproof is great. Shifted very well with what seemed to be less of that HD clunk.
I have read several of the other posts but wanted to get a last and final recommendation on the specific product - Is "V-TWIN TRANSMISSION OIL WITH SHOCKPROOF®" what you and Jack are running or is it "HEAVY SHOCKPROOF®" gear oil that is billed as "film thickness greater than an SAE 75W250 with low fluid friction like 75W90" or is it something else?
The slave cylinder and screaming eagle clutch is going in to my science project and I wanted to give this a try as well.
MDO,
When you run out of your HD Primary oil, give SYN3 a try in the primary.
Surprised the crap out of me a few years back how much nicer the clutch engagement is with the SYN3...and no slippage.
Kevin
- This product dampens transmission noise (reducing the notorious shifting clunk found in these gearboxes), dramatically reduces temperature, provides thicker oil films between gear teeth and resists throw-off
- For all aftermarket versions like Baker, JIMS, S&S, etc.
- For all H-D® trans including with Evolution engines, Twin Cam engines and latest 6-speed Cruise Drive
- Same fluid as our unique Heavy ShockProof® Gear Oil
This is from Redline web page
For anyone interested, here's a snapshot of the Redline Shockproof White Paper.
That is good stuff!!!
Thanks for the contribution to the "Great Oil Debate"orag: and the Trike Talk tech library
Take the long way there and back like I do
Just now got back myself, NO broken eggs this trip:laugh:
Just curious , did the brake fluid line fit OK. Never mind, you said you were getting brake lines made.
Today I installed a set of Cyclesmiths Banana Boards on the trike and liked 'em
so much , I ordered the matching passenger set .
A few days ago I had the oil cooler shroud painted and installed...so far...so good.

PS I would have liked to show you the pictures BUT I absolutely cannot figure out
why this site is so difficult to upload stuff, in spite of printing out the directions .
I easily uploaded the same on the TriGlide and Freewheeler section of The
Harley Davidson Forum if you would like to see the pictures. I guess
I am a Techno-Munchkin...sorry
Today I installed a set of Cyclesmiths Banana Boards on the trike
