Water in swing arm?

While looking at a Harley site I ran across this question: Did a rear tire change on a 2009 Street Glide and when I removed the screws holding the lower belt guard about cup of water pored out. Anyone else experienced this?

This was on a regular two wheeler, not a trike, but I'm wondering if it's possible for water to get inside our swing arms?

The owner of the bike found water can get in thru holes where the belt guard bolts on. Since we don't have belt guards I'm hoping this is not a problem, but I just got out of the hospital after 24 days so you might understand why I'm not up to looking at my own bike. Don't think I should be moving bike around, much less crawling on the ground.

Harley claims this is a cosmetic problem. It may be cosmetic for now but as more swing arms rust out and accidents occur I see a law suit the size of which HD may regret.

If the assembly is not air-tight, water could get into it from over-washing and even riding in the rain. At the same time it should also run out while riding in the dry. If there is a concern for a particular individual, just drill an 1/8" hole beneath the swingarm for any water to drain out.

I would suggest that this particular bike was on the side-stand after washing and the water collected in that side of the swingarm until he removed the belt guard. :Shrug:
