hi all it,s my first post .thanks for leting me join. i have a vw trike with a 1600 motor &i put a88 kit new jugs&ect. iwood like to know the displacmet/hp again thanks

Welcome to Triketalk from Southeast Ohio! If you used a 88mm piston kit that makes a 1679. This kit is not real common and requires you to cut the heads out. If it was a more common 87mm kit, you have a 1641 and no head work required.

The reason it’s not made anymore is they were to thin and caused overheating. Might not be as bad in a trike like they are in a car. Just make sure your tins and fan is in good working order. If you want a couple more HP, add a set of 1.25 rocker arms.

HEY Rsw, was told the same thing about the 1.25 rockers, is it really worth the couple hundred dollars? Another question, are you saying that this change with the up graded heads would increase HP that much, and still not heat up and be dependable . THANKS RICK

Heres a reply I received from a guy when I asked about going to a 1641. I have to stick with a 34 pict 3 carb because of clearance issues with my trikes body.

Frankly, you aren't going to get 5-10 more HP out of a mere 3½% displacement increase with nothing else done. If you're serious about replacing the pistons/cylinders, I recommend you get a set of AA "thickwall slip-in" 88s - they require no machinework to the case (you just have to open the heads up) and you get a nice thick cylinderwall and 6% more displacement (1679cc) which'll still work with the single 34PICT-3 carb - you will feel the difference, I promise.

If you have a stock (or nearly-stock) cam, you could also use the opportunity to replace the valve springs with HD singles and install ratio rocker arms (1.25s to do it on the cheap, or 1.4s - which'll probably require different pushrods too - if you want to go for the "max"). Together, the 88s, HD singles, and 1.4s should give you an honest +10HP and +700RPM. Should you ever feel that's inadequate, slapping on some dual 1bbls (I'd use 34ICT Webers) would be good for another +5HP...'bout the limit without splitting the case.

Balancing is a worthy ambition, but if you're going to split the case to do that there are other plans - exchange the cam for one that'll do what you want with the stock 1.1 rockers to save that expense, and perhaps go another way with the piston/cylinder choice...1679 is as big as I'd go with the stock carb, but if you're going to upgrade the carburetion you may as well bump the displacement up to 1775 (or even 1835) while you're at it. By this point you should also have the flywheel & crank 8-dowelled - on a full-weight Beetle I'd do that for an 1879 but for your relatively light trike 4 dowels should be safe up to ~75HP if you won't ever try to do burnouts/wheely exhibitions. Anything faster puts you into more serious territory IMO, where a counterweighted crank, improved exhaust system, etc. etc.

Probably not needed with the single carb, but even with that if you add the HD springs and ratio rockers it'd be wise to go with "solid" rockerarm shafts in order to lose the wavy-washer/springclip breakage liability of the stock setup...stock is pretty reliable up to ~5000RPM, and you shouldn't be spinning a non-counterweighted crank past ~5500, so stock will usually do at least until you miss a shift or downshift at too high of an RPM.

I could write a few paragraphs on setting up solid rockers and swivelfoot adjusters (in fact I already have, the file's around here somewhere) but I won't bore you with that unless you're seriously going to take that plunge.

Basically, you will be able to tell a big difference with the 88mm cylinders and the 1.25 rockers while using with a stock 34 pict 3 carb. I just bought a new/rebuilt 1600 long block to put in my trike. Going to run it for a while and do the 88mm/1.25 rocker upgrade later on. Think it will put out more than enough horsepower for me.

Lota' Horsepower can be found in VWs...I ran this Car on the 5/8 Asphalt Track in Nashville. Gene Berg Stroker Crank, Carrilo Rods, Berg Pistons/Cylinders, Berg Camshaft, SCAT Timing Gears, Billet Pulleys, Kennedy Cluth Assembly, SCAT Heads, Berg Headers, SCAT Intake Manifolds, Twin 48 IDA Weber Carbs, Berg 5-spd conversion Transaxle, etc., etc., etc. I had 3 Engines, 1930cc, 2010cc, and a 2180cc with a one pound per CC weight limit...."1983"...I'm in the VW, Jeff Green in the White Mustang, and either Bobby Allison or Grady Humphries in the Miller Mustang (Grady worked and drove for Bobby).....

That Pic was taken at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.....I raced NASCAR LMS with Chevelles and Novas at B.I.R., Nashville, Huntsville, etc. in the 70s and 80s though.....Great Era.....ThumbUp
