My wife has been pushing me to get a trike and get rid of the 2 bikes that I have. Not a bad idea but they are expensive to buy new. So, I am thinking of triking my '06 VTX 1300 which only has 13,000 miles on it. Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas (based on personal experience) on which conversion unit would be best? Any thoughts would be appreciated as I have had no experience with trikes. Thank you.

Hey VLow, welcome to TrikeTalk! We have a number of VTX owners here, and I know you will get a lot of great replies. The VTX sure does make a nice trike..... you won't regret it.

Welcome aboard x2 what Nana posted. Champion makes a nice VTX conversion, but the installer is the real key to how happy you will be.

Went with a Roadsmith kit myself. Did 90% of the work myself with a a few extra hands when needed. Check them out and look at their instructions. Well laid out.

I think most of the major trike kits are well built and designed. Biggest factor i would take into consideration is where i would have to go for service -repairs----have found this to be the biggest obstacle in the "trike community"

Hay VLOW I have a 05 1300VTX with a Champion kit Im in Palmer Mass. If you want to look at , or take it around the block ??? get back to me

Thanks for the invite, Road Dog. I'll take you up on it in early March if the invitation is still good then. Did you do the conversion yourself or did you have it done locally? Does the 1300 have the muscle? Also, if you don't mind sharing your thoughts, what made you choose Champion as opposed to some of the other units. Thanks for your input.

:wave4: Hey, VLow, welcome to the site!! Always nice to meet a new neighbor!! Keep us informed how it goes - I'm seriously thinking about a VTX for my next one, too.

Be sure to sign up for the Trike Owners International group - it's free, and we really need to grow the MA chapter!!

Also keep the rallies in mind - the TrikeTalk rally in June, and our "local" gathering the end of August! We'd love to have you at either one, or both!! ThumbUp

:wave4: Hello from Arkansas! I have a 1300C with the Champion conversion, and I really like it. Bought it new from the dealership about 80 miles from home! Not having anything else to compare to I wouldn't know if other companies offer a better product. I have about 17,000 miles on so far and no problems! :)

My Wife's Trike is a 2006 VTX1300R with a Motor Trike Kit, and one Bazooka's 6 Degree Rake Kits.....

I used a HD grab rail from a bagger. Bent slightly to match the fender.

Thanks for the input hillycat but when I went to the Champion website I couldn't find a kit for the 1300C only the 1800. Can the kit for the 1800 be used for the 1300 as well? Thanks again.

You need to look again. The Web site shows one for both the 1300 and 1800. Same write up so it might be the same kit, but there are 2 different listings.

VLow:

There are 2 pages of kits on the Champion site, the 1300 is on page 2. I just got done converting my '06 1300S which in my opinion was really easy to do. The instruction manual for the most part was really good. Got the solid axle unit even though I live on dirt roads (proven product). I choose Champion based strictly on price, read a million reviews on each and finally was just a money issue. The hardest part was getting the parts out of the crate.

Having said all that, I would encourage you to followup and keep on top of the dealer you decide to do business with. Confirm what you want with Champion, not your dealer, once the order is placed. When the crate arrives, it's yours. So make sure you get what you want. It makes for a more fulfiling experience.

One other note on Champion. Being a self installer, and they do sell kits to us, there customer service sucks. I had an issue with shock preload, e-mailed them the question, and within 4 hours had a phone call from a rep (pretty good, huh?) Great conversation and informative, but as soon as I told him I self installed, he went cold and was gone in ten seconds flat. He did email me a info sheet for the IRS unit, which I do not have. Tried to get the correct info sheet, but no, and I mean, NO response. The dealers must all have additional information sheets put out by Champion, to make the assembly process eaiser, but we are not privy apparently.

I hope this helps.

I did see the listing for a 1300 but they ID'd it as an 1800 in the description. I guess they are either the same kit or it was a typo on their part. Either way, from the responses that I have received it apparently works.
