Virginia Trike Converters

When you converted your bike to a trike, did you have to do anything special in regards to your registration through the DMV - I asked them yesterday (Spotsy Cty) and believe it or not they weren't sure and told me to call a number that I can't get through to (not surprising).

Nothing changes in Tennessee on the Title, just on the Registration (there is a code for Trike), and at the Insurance Office.....may be what Your State does....Our County Clerk and my Insurance Company (State Farm) were right on top of it...might consult Your Insurance Company for some real factual assistance.....ThumbUp

Just insurance. I had to have mine inspected at DMV as it came from another state. Since Trikes were new to Conn. back then, they really looked at it but registered it as a motorcycle. The insurance company I had to tell them or I would get nothing for it if there was an accident.

I just saw this post. When I get home later, I'll check my Virginia title. I believe it's still titled as a bike. Just the insurance company knows it has a trike conversion and if memory serves me right, I also believe that I got am insurance reduction because it is a trike now and not a two wheeler. I guess State Farm also thinks they're safer.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you regarding the Virginia Title,,,. To be honest, my memory sucks!!! :( I just found this post again as I was looking for topics on the forum.

Any way, my VA title states "Motorcycle". There's no mention of a trike or trike conversion anywhere on the title. Even my registration states Motorcycle.

I have State Farm insurance as well and the agent told me that I would NOT even have an increase in my cost of coverage, but to just keep the receipt, in case of damage. Is this the same in your state.

The State of Illinois REQUIRES that a Motorcycle converted to a Trike be re-Titled, Registered, and Plated as a Trike.
That became Law back in 2010 or 2011. I believe (but not 100% sure) any that had been triked prior to the date it became Law were "grandfathered" as not applicable to that requirement.
Feel free to contact the Office of the Secretary of State in Illinois to confirm that fact.

Had heard more "cash strapped" States were considering the same to generate Revenue but am unaware of any other than Illinois that actually followed through as of yet.
Obviously the Commonwealth of Virginia is not one of them. Kentucky does not either.

It's ALL about the Money ThumbUp

Make sure that your insurance indicates that your 'motorcycle' is a trike and that it is insured for the cost of replacing the motorcycle and the trike kit.

Ditto!! That's the MOST important issue!
