Anyone buy thier kit unpainted? The primer $375 and color $825 is a total of $1200. Hard to belive you can't get it pained locally for less than that.

Anyone else do this? And what was thier experience?

Thanks Gary

Looking to buy the Champion IRS for a VTX 1300C for my wife.

I can tell you this much, the paint job from the Champion factory looks every bit as good as the paint job on my Wing from Honda. Exact match and worth the money.

It cost my friend $1,200 to get his Bushtec trailer painted Yellow to exactly match his Wing

</div>I purchased mine un painted. My neighbor is a professional show car/boat painter. He did an oustanding job. Looks factory. If I had to pay him what it was worth it would of been every bit as much as Champion if not more. Unless you are doing it yourself or have a neighbor like mine who is willing to do you a great job at a low price, go the the Champion job.

Is the Champion paint base coat clear coat? I had my wife's other bike an sv650 repainted with Base coat clear coat locally for $350. Included a fairing, tank, side covers, front fender.

The only way you can get out of paying out the kazoo for a paint job is to do it yourself. The more expensive the bike the more expensive the paint job.

Okay here I go. The un-painted shell from Champion is just like it comes out of the mold. There is release agent and mold imperfections etc. So first thing is you have a lot of sanding and some filling to get a nice surface to paint. If you are going multi-color then you have masking off to do. You have to shoot several coats and there is sanding to be done in between coats if you want a good paint job. After you have your base color coats on then you have several clear coatrs to shoot. There will most likely be sanding in between those also.

When the clear is done and it has been allowed to setup, then the buffing takes place for that really nice shine. There are alot of prep hours in a good paint job. Also a good painter is needed to match the paint that is on the rest of the bike. Your call but the factory charge is not out of line by any means.

I painted the gas tank on my 04 moto guzzi A lot of work and prep went into it. I used to best rustoleum paint that money could buy about $7.00 a can. Shook the hell out of those cans until those marbles bouncing around liked of driven me crazy, all that banging around. Well being the expert spray can painter that I am the silver metallic finish came out brilliant if I may say so myself and I do. I topped of a perfect paint job with 2 coats of satin clear. first went on just fine then the second went on just as fine and living in Louisiana at the time along comes a giant mosquito and lands on the fresh clear coat. No problem I'll wait for the paint to dry and respray it again. This is getting me bored I'm sure if you are still here that you are bored as well. Its was next to impossible to touch up what I had done so about $100.00 in paint and supplies and about 1 week unpaid labor and I got a faulted paint job. I should have drank a V8 instead.

So when the trike installer guy wanted $600.00 to paint the fenders and brackets I said go for it. and I'm happy with the outcome. NO mosquito foot prints. curley

If you get it painted from champion you do not pay the $375. For primer, you can buy it primered $375. Or painted $850. Champion paint is xcellent base coat clear coat there all wet sanded & buffed, i have a body shop & all the kits i by i get them painted. When you get the body its all painted all assembled wires lights trunk gasket latches & lock its all together bolt it on & your done, & a good paint match .

like I said before all depends on the color. My friends was the 2002 Gold Wing Yellow pearl . 2 coats of white base coat sanded , 2 coats of white pearl sanded , 3 coats of clear yellow sanded, and then 4 coats of clear and sanded and buffed. Looks better than factory

I just received the kit from Champion for my 94 SE. The paint is INCREDIBLE! It is the candy red two tone and matched perfectly. The striping in awesome. I would recommend the Champion paint. i have been to the factory and they are very particular on their quality control. Hope this helps.

Hard to belive you can't get it painted locally for less than that.

I asked my dealer the very same question and he said it's the opposite. You can't get the quality of the paint job from the factory (in my case, Hannigan) without spending more locally.

If you have a local body shop where you do a lot of business or are on good terms they can probably paint it for less. I had my painted for $450 and it matches 99% which suits me ok!!! Like I said it helps if you take your work to them!! Good luck!
