UBS Bolt Recall

Took my first decent (100 miles) ride on the trike since getting
the recall done. I've been kinda taking baby steps with rides
just in case. No problems so far and we're not planning on any
overnight trips anyways but I'm still going to be cautious. I have
my two wheeler on the battery tender just in case.

Had my recall done in February and since then I’ve done about 800 miles. No issues whatsoever. I would not worry about baby steps and just jump on the bike and roll! Yeah man!

I want to get my 18 Goldwing Trike bolt recall done. I would like to know of a place in the Phoenix or even Tucson area or general Arizona, where the dealership can do a Trike and their Tech knows what they are doing!
Communicated with a few Honda dealerships and they can't or won't do a Trike.
So looking for recommendations and they must work on a Trike.

The mechanic that done mine in Oxford Alabama, said after doing a couple he had rather do a trike.

We went for a ride yesterday and we started hearing a strange noise on the way to our destination, on the way back it got worse and noticed a vibration also. Made a worse noise when I left off the throttle.
When we got home I jacked up the rear and spun the rear tires and no noise coming from the rearend.
Going to haul it down today to D&D in Tempe but they can't work on it until Thursday of next week.
Thought it might be a universal joint on the Trike driveshaft but that is rock solid and wheel bearings are fine also. I am afraid it is in the transmission of the DCT.
I don't know if that recalled bolt would cause all of this above?
My Trike only has 5,750 miles on it and it has been babied and never abused. So anything can happen at any time. I will let you know what they find.
Thoughts?

Back in post #30 WiredGeorge asked what is a UBS bolt. I would like an answer to that also. I am not a Honda rider but have many friends who are. I haven't heard of this bolt/problem.

The full name is Unified Bearing Stress bolt. It attaches the primary gear. If the bolt fails, the engine could end up locking up as well as rear wheel. And I believe if the bolt fails, you will pretty much need a new motor. And this is specific to 18+ Goldwings.

Over on one of the other forums, there are several guys replacing the 2 ISG bolts while they are in there. Sounds like it’s not a part of the recall, but they are having troubles with one of them breaking as well. Here’s a cut and paste:

“There are two ISG bolts. Only one is shown on the Honda parts diagram. It is item 12 in the diagram below. The bolt screws into the end of the shaft on the ISG driven gear assembly to keep the ISG FR Couple attached to the ISG driven gear assembly.”

“The arrow in the diagram below points to the “other ISG bolt. It is screwed into the rotor shaft of the ISG to keep the coupler in place. This coupler is inserted into slots in the rubber dampers which fit into Item 6 in the above diagram.“

Ok so we know the UBS bolt is the Unified Bearing Stress bolt, but what is the ISG bolt?

Integrated Starter Generator.

When it breaks, they are saying you hear a rattling noise coming from that area.

Of the two ISG bolts, the one that is breaking has an updated part number. On the head of the bolt, the factory one has a “10” on it. The replacement bolt has a “10” with a “J” under it.

They are saying it can be replaced from the bottom side of the bike, but I have no idea. I’ll leave it up to the Honda guys to chime in on the details

When I got down to D&D in Tempe yesterday late afternoon and unloaded my 18 DCT Goldwing CSC Trike, I went to drive it to their door and that thing was rattling like you had steel balls in a metal can. Couldn't believe how loud it was and I was just doing a fast idle in first gear. It definitely will be easy to find.
Should have an update by next Friday, I hope.

I heard yesterday that Go AZ in Scottsdale is doing the bolt overhaul. They are doing bikes and Trikes and sounded like they have done quite a few already.
