Trying to Avoid Mess Changing Oil Filter

To start I really want DK's Oil Relocation Kit, but finances aren't there at the moment and I've got another oil change approaching. Here's what I'm thinking. Jack the right rear wheel off the ground so it's leaning left. Put my oil catch drain funnel underneath the filter and punch a hole in the end to drain it before removal. Anybody ever punch a hole in one of these oil filters before?
 
That's what i do all the time. I do one other thing too. I pack some paper towels under the filter area and not a drip on the ground.
Or down the frame and all over the wiring to the oil cooler. That's where it always seems to end up. Like the paper towel idea.

JT I use the orange tray under the filter but before removing filter I drill one hole in the bottom of filter and one at the top to vent, go have a cold drink come back loosen the filter so top hole is on bottom and see if it is completely drained.

I’m gonna go with this change your oil mess meditation project and I see the good ideas being shared here with you … that being said … and at great personal risk to my own digital life, why would you not ride over to Harley, have a hot dog and ride back home with your new oil and not a single drop of runoff less than an hour later.

It’s about $100.00 to have the dealership change your oil … if you do it yourself, although you get the fun factor (not really) you still have to buy 5 quarts of oil and a new filter (around $80.00)

I always have the dealership do it … clean, neat, fast, cheap and you usually can just drive in without appointment. Just asking

You do have to buy the oil and the filter so you kinda should deduct that from lunch 🫤 for the very little extra and me not doing it, cleaning it up and disposing of the old oil it’s really a win win.

I have never had an issue and the dealership has changed my oil since forever. Just another option to explore 🤔
 
I also tap two holes in the filter and let it drain onto a coated divider I get from a case of beer. Done properly and no oil mess to clean up.
 
You know I always follow what you have done to your Free and I have stolen some great ideas from you as well … I know how this digital world of texts is very often misinterpreted

That being said … you have to bring the old oil and filter to the recycling place on your time and also on your dime …

I know that we have been doing this motorcycle thing for decades and I also worked for Harley Davidson Of Ft Lauderdale for a couple of 3 years.

By the time you buy 5 quarts of oil, new oil filter, new o ring, lay on the floor under your hot bike and drain the oil, transfer the old oil into a container that recycling takes, drive back and forth on your dime … the do it yourself oil change costs you more time and money than if you brought it to Harley … absolutely
 
I know here in Asheboro you can't drive right in and get an oil change. And it will surely be more than $100. It will be at least an hour labor that they charge you. That's not why I don't go down there and do it. I do it so I know it's completely topped up with exactly what it's supposed to have. When I had the first service done and got home I checked it and I had to top up the engine oil and the transmission.

Well, no. Material cost is the same, but I'm not paying HD $100 an hour for what I can do in 15 minutes. The recycle place is 5 minutes up the road and I always wait until I have other things that need to go there. This only gets done on the 5,000 mile service schedule when I check all the other stuff on the list. The HD dealership is 45 minutes from me and my getting there is dependent on weather. Then I wait there for two or three hours. So, in my case, it's way easier for me to do it myself.
 
All makes sense to me, I get it … just sharing the math. Harley charges 4/10ths of an hour for labor to change your oil, the oil (and I use HD 360) and filter kit is 81.95+ tax 9% here = $89.33 just for product. I’m always in and out right away and never need an appointment (I still call first anyway)

It’s very clean and easy to have Harley do it for me but I understand if your situation is unique. I have been all over the country and Harley has the $100.00 oil change everywhere. My shop is about 1/2 hr ride on any beautiful day. A chance to take the Mrs out to lunch and ride home with clean fresh oil …

It's that making sure it's done right thing that concerns me. First time I went to my current HD dealer to do the 15,000 mile service I noticed they billed for 2 spark plugs. Was told we always change the plugs during the service. I said, fine, but the M8's have 4 plugs. Guy just looked at me. Have to say at 35,000 miles that they've gotten better since then,but I started doing my own service after that incident.
 
I change my own oil. Despite the mess, this gives me a chance to thoroughly inspect my trike, ensure fasteners are tight and clean the undercarriage. I place aluminum foil under the filter and angle it toward the drain pan. Then I use aerosol brake cleaner to remove residual oil.
 
That 360 oil is non synthetic, Thats at best is good for 3000 miles versus synthetic that's good for 5000 to 7500 miles.

The trike came new with 360 and for me every 3000 works fine. I always used the stock original oil in all my bikes whether they came with conventional or synthetic that’s what they always used
 
Oil is definitely a personal choice. I believe the oil companies are screwing us with advertising and BS. I’ve been using Napa 15W50 full syn . I change it around 5000 miles depending what kind of riding I do. The main thing to remember is to actually change it. Primary at 10000 and transmission at 20000 as the manual says. I truly believe we waste oil especially while using full synthetic. But at $5 a quart it’s not too bad. I have a 5 gallon bucket I dump mine and when it gets full I empty it at the local recycling center.

Like you NGU I like to follow the manual recommendation for service intervals, fluid changes and I choose to replace the oils with the same oils that came in the bike from Harley.

If you follow the manual, why not the fluid recommendations as well? I don’t know where Harley is at your location but I would rather that they handled the hot bike, the 5 gallons of waste oil (40lbs) and that they took it to recycling, cleaned up the tools and the mess, laid on their floor and at the really reasonable price that Harley charges to change my oil I can do it as often as I like. Big bang for the buck.
 
I never could pull the oil filter on a Harley without making a mess somehow. For my 23 Trike, I installed DK Customs oil filter relocation kit.
My 07 Heritage, I change the oil outside on the driveway.

It’s a simple push rod engine. I truly believe we over think fluids. Now, Harley Is using gear oil in the primary. And guess what , they started to use 15W50 now. I went 92000 miles withmy 07 FLHTC and when I sold the motor to a chopper builder in Chicago, he called me to ask what I’d been using. He said really. It’s motor oil, gear oil . Just that. Marketing dollars.
I have nothing against using what the factory recommends but they have changed their minds so much that I don’t believe what they recommend anymore much.
