Trip to see the Wizard

I took the trip on the yellow brick road this last weekend.“Off to see the Wizard” (to be honest it was more like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”)

I own a 2011 TG with a little over 31 K on it. Since its purchase, I like many others have tried allot of things to get a little more out of them. Cutting out CAT, slip ons of all types, different tuners and downloads with all types of results.

We all ride different ways and different landscapes. I wanted a trike that allowed me to use it my way. Get on, key on, and ride. Around the block, around the country, solo, two up and with or without a trailer. This is what I needed, do not care about HP or TQ numbers, my butt and wrist will tell me what I need to know and it needed to be on a Harley TG.

I have had mixed results in the past, at times feeling good about tubby and its performance. Well now I know what I have been missing in the past!

This upgrade started with an e mail to WIZ. I stated where I was at with tubby and was thinking of a cam change. When he picked himself off the floor, he called with a plan. As he will only tune with TTS, I got one. He recommended the SE 254E cams knowing how I rode and what I was wanting out of tubby. Also picked up Black-Ops lifters, assorted other stuff and a Hayden Primary chain adjuster.

First, before I left the house, the base TTS tune was put into bike, tuning blind, he set me up with a tune to come down with. This tune was better than any tune I had been able to come up with using another “auto”tune set-up. Without a tuner change, my trip down would have been like all others before it, wondering when the bike would fall on its face and have a hard time getting out of its own way. It always happened at some point, never knowing if at 50 miles or 500 miles. Would have to stop and re-flash tune and wonder when it would happen again. With the TTS and this base tune, made it there no problem.

Rode down on Friday. Wiz did cam change, Hayden adjuster and got a base tune into bike on Saturday and we called it a day. Sunday morning, pulled exhaust off again due to leak at heads. (Poor pipe design, story for another day) then got some road work in on tune. I left out of there for home around 1 PM.<o:p </o

The trip home was the best 600 miles I have road out of the 31,000 on this trike. The cams are not something that jump out at a given RPM.They are just there and stay in as far as I need them to. (I am not a WOT type) Best way for me to state it, very forgiving of rider input. Excellent choice by Wiz for a trike ridden like I ride it.

I-75 from GA up to OH is not known to be flat. I was able to pull trailer at speeds between 70 and 80 in 6th with cruise set. Never able to before. When I needed to, could twist throttle and it still had some to give. This was an excellent call by WIZ to fill my needs. As far as theTTS tune, I now know what a tuned TG feels like. I know nothing about tuning except that give a knowledgeable tuner a good base map and a means to adjust it with and all will be happy. TTS is the hardware, WIZ was the man to get it dialed to my bike.

Before you ask, HEAT. I am the type when on interstate roads, ride till you need gas. I have a digital oil temp gauge. Temps were very good, between 225 and 230 running 70 to 80 with trailer and hilly. One time at the end of a full tank run, on long uphill, it peaked at 235. Going down to GA on same roads, it was common to reside at 250+ at times. Felt heat (or perceived heat off motor as some here call it), better than before cams and a good tune. It is a Harley after all!!!
Some may balk at these changes, some may get food for thought, I got a trike just the way I want it. ThumbUp

Glad to hear it all worked out for you. I have the SEPRO tuner and finally found someone here in Denver that can actually work on it and knows what he's doing. Went to see him two weekends ago to set up an appointment and as we were talking, it turns out he's the main rep / tuner guy for the TTS in Colorado. I went with the SEPRO because I wasn't sure I could ever find anyone that knew how to set my tune up correctly. He said, as Wiz has many times, that the TTS gives you more options and control over the tune and highly recommended it. Decisions.....Decisions.

I had the 254E installed last week at a local Dealer. Looking forward to the improvement in rideability. Did you notice any difference in MPG? Although, pulling a trailer is gonna kill mileage anyway.

Glad everything worked out for you buddy. Sounds really good. Need to come down and drive it to see the difference compared to mine. Jim

When push comes to shove, unless the mileage goes into the basement, I will take a good ride over mileage. I will look at it after a little more riding time and tanks of gas and report back. For some reason today I just had trouble keeping anywhere near the speed limit! It may take a few days for me to settle down.

I also gave up another brand of tuner for this setup. All said and done, It was worth it. It also is like you said, the tuning device needs tweaked by someone that knows how.

What was your prior fuel mileage while towing your trailer before the Wizards touch was applied??

I really do not pay big attention to it so I will not guess. My comparison to go by is it now runs, up hills, or flat lands at speed in 95 degree heat, as it was today. Before it would just roll over and play dead.
Not a rocket but it will get me from point A to B, a full tank of gas at a time. Just wait, I will get there, save me a place at the table.ThumbUp

I agree with You 110% ..Wiz is the man!!!
My TG just keeps running better and better the more I ride it, exactly what Wiz told me .

I wouldn't for a second doubt the value of a good tuner if it comes with a tech that knows what ther are doing !!
That said,,,, I would like to know what the extra 200 items that are available for adjustment with the TTS tuner over the Power Vision would be of any use in the real world ?? Other than being able to flash a blank ECM that I can have the stealer do when I purchase the ECM new.
I would just like to know.......

All the little extras with the TTS do come in handy when getting a good tune, it helps even take the rough edges off a cranky combination to tune. I don't think the vision would have gotten my 120 to run as well as it does, the TTS has all the tools to get the tune where it needed to be.

One of the big hitters is the egr tables in the TTS, its amazing how they can smooth things out and make the engine just plain run real nice.

Ok that is one I would like to see. The Vision doesn't have that. I was understanding that was a manual set-up, Not electronic. I guess it could be a solenoid.

Dennis was so excited about his bike that he left in the middle of the day instead of waiting for the morning. I wanted to do a big burnout in my driveway but he may have been a little angry about that. :D:D

He will average, solo and trying to leave the throttle alone, about 36-38. He can get it up to and past the 40 mark if he desires.

The TTS has over 200 "hidden" software data changes in the calibrations which are dependent on the bike build, the model year and the model bike. These are simple code switches by TTS and only they can make these changes, an end user has no way to get in there.

There are many tables in the TTS software which other tuners don't possess. I've given up on all other tuners and only tune with the TTS now. Why? Because when I tune a bike I want the best tool for the job, not a guess or to be limited to what the software wants to give me.

EGR... The new TTSIII software will be out very soon. It will contain what is called Flight Recorder. This FR will allow you to record data without a computer if you have the blue TTSII box. When the VTuneIII software is available it will allow the TTS to use FR data for adjusting the following automatically..

VE's
EGR
Cubic Inch changes on the fly

Once the VTunes are complete it will allow you to do timing adjustment data runs. These runs will look for high timing areas and make suggested timing table adjustments.

Hate to hijack this thread but we now return to the normal station.

It was fun Dennis...

Sounds like another GREAT JOB by the Wiz. We are lucky to have so much knowledge and so many great people on the forums. Mine runs excellent thanks to Wiz.

You guys have no idea how many TrikeTalk.com members Dave A/K/A Wiz has helped since this forum began back in early 2008. He's one fine fella and knows his stuff when it comes to Harleys. Almost makes me want to buy another one...

What seems funny to me is that some seem to be nervous when they contact me. I don't know why. Do I make people nervous?? :xzqxz:

------

Dennis... I'll bet soon enough you'll try but lock the trunk so it won't snap open again. ThumbUp

Not half as fun as the ride home. I still have not punched it as you did coming back from a tune run. Front was extended way out, almost off the ground!
I will remain grounded!!!
Dennis

Go ahead and pick the front end up on that ol fat girl its funpepper.

I think its just folks feel like their imposing, they don't realize your a great guy willing to help them out.

Put me down in the been helped column. Much appreciated, too. Somehow, I don't think the helping has ended either ;-)

Hey Dennis, did you keep the PV on the scoot for the gauges?

WIZ,
Just took the bride out for a little putt. I was surprised, she stated that it finally sounded like a Harley??(when did you sell the Honda?)
Just before we got back, told her to hold on. Just a little hard first to second and front end came right up, all she said was give me more warning or she would get whip lash! She did get a little upset when I hammered it in garage and she new the front came up.
She stated it took a 1200 mile round trip to get it done but sure seemed worth it.
Thanks,
Dennis

That's a good testament to the SE254E cam Dennis. A butt load of bottom end torque that just doesn't quit like most torque cams and it is a qualified HD part that can be installed by every Harley Dealer without busting up your warranty.

After all that work we only did two things.

Replace the cams and trashed the PV for the TTS.

Took you 18 months to make up your mind, guess that's better than 2 years, right? :wave4:

Go easy on Tubby... don't want to break that drive belt. :gah:

I can not say this would be the "fix all" for everybody. Everybody expects different things from their "tubby". Can state that I went the "long" way around to get here, painful trip, a little costly in wrong moves but now a good combination for the way I ride. ThumbUp
