Trike trunk open warning

Just got my motortrike adventure kit installed on my 2012 gl1800. The trunk open warning for the trike trunk does not work. I questioned the installer on this and was told the plug was changed for 2012 and will not work with the motortrike plug. Can anyone with a motortrike kit verify this or am I not being told the truth? I will get this working on my own this fall or winter, after riding season, looks to be a simple fix.

I'm not sure about the plug being changed, but my trike trunk does not work either. Installer said he may have forgotten to hook it up. I'll be following this thread. I have a '12 GW with the Razor kit.

Odd. My 2012 Wing with a 2014 MT Razor works just fine. I think somebody screwed up.

I have the same issue on my 09 Wing. Havent had time to look into it. It was that way when we bought it.
I can't speak for the 2012 and later however the 09 is the same as my 06. I had the same issue with mine and finally fixed it. Take your right wheel off and find the wire that goes down to the right rear tail light. You will find a wire there that will accept the wire from the lower trunk. Once you have the wire in hand it will be easy to plug into the wire harness in the right wheel well.
I can probably find a pic or two if anyone is interested.

Thank you, I will have to look into that when time allows.

Thanks for posting that SMSgt, I am very interested in this, mine doesn't work either. There is a wire in the right wheel well that isn't plugged in to anything, that may be the wire I need. I will have to check it and see if there is any voltage on it. Do you know whether the switch in the trunk needs to be a normally open or normally closed switch. I would suspect it needs to be a normally open switch if the wire in the harness didn't need a shorting link installed to keep the indicator from turning on. That way it would be a closed circuit when the switch is operated. I have looked through the wiring diagrams I have and through the text in the service manuals I have available and there is no mention of the wire, switch or anything else associated with the open box warning. It does include the wiring for the electronic opener though. There is probably a wire for the left side also, I haven't looked on that side.

By what I can see of your pic you don't have a Roadsmith. What you'll need to do is get into the latching mechanism and find the wires that go to the switch. Then the wires will lead you to the plug that should plug into the right taillight harness. I would think that the switch is normally closed because when you open your trunk the switch closes and remains closed until you close your trunk which will open the circuit.
You are correct in thinking that both sides of the motorcycle have the same type there is exactly the same wire setup on the left side taillight but you won't need it unless you are left handed and want to see left bag open instead of right bag open on your dash.
I hope this helps.

I can't verify the possible connector difference debacle but even if that were true any installer worth his salt and even a tiny bit of ability should/would make it right.

As for the bag open indicator switches: I checked the '01, '06, and '15 service manuals. All three agree. Here is what it says....

There should be continuity with the saddlebag lid open, and no continuity with the lid closed.

Each model has different wiring harness locations and connector designations but the switch assembly and operation has remained consistent. Hope that helps.. :xszpv:

Does your hazards work?
I had the same issue with Csc on a 2012 and was told the same thing by my vendor/converter. Come to find out after spending $215.00 they did not reinstall the hazard diode by the relay module under the seat. this will effect the issue you are having.the seat. Btw they sent me a check for the repair.

I know this is a older post, but still wondering if you got your 'trunk open warning' fixed? I finally just went through mine, after 3 years and fixed mine.

On the connector issue - mine didn't match either. I had to use the wire harness from the saddlebag, as a jumper, and it worked fine. If you have any questions, just let me know.

DO NOT GO BY YOUR INSTALLER. CALL MOTORTRIKE DIRECTLY.
Some will try to get away with something and other just don't know , either how to make a change due to the kit or just figures it just works that way. Mine was the installer was too lazy to check into it.

Gotta work on this .....

Have had our trike 11 years now, a very few times I have left home and had a "moment" of question ..... "did I or did I not shut the trunk?" A few times, I hadn't, usually I had.

Mine never came with an indicator as it predates such .... but y'all have me thinking.

I could mount a flag pole to the trunk lid, it I see it in the mirror, trunk shut .... if not, then I either left trunk open or flag pole broke off.

No .... I think I'm gonna look for something more "presentable" .... Thanks! Just never thought about it enough, but good idea. :D
