Trike trailer wiring

Maybe I'm doing something wrong; but when I've tried 2 different plug and play harnesses to try and wire a trailer, I get the same result. Right turn signal works, Running lights work, Left turn signal=nothing, Brake light brings on the right turn signal, but solid, no brake lights.

Perhaps I'm not plugged into the correct connector? I ran the same trailer harness on my '02 and '06 Ultras without an issue. Then decided that I should try a new harness from J&P for the Tri. No help.

Why am I not having any success with this Tri-glide? Is there a secondary connector that I am not seeing under the seat frame rails?

What year Triglide?

I dunno if you have the can bus system , it does not like change it seems

[h=5]Overview of Rivco Signal Decoder For Can-Bus - HD0007-50[/h]

  • This 4 to 5 wire signal decoder box is a plug in connection between the #HD007-48 sub harness and the trailer wiring isolator.
  • This new wiring combines the brake and turn signal functions together on a single wire from a computer module to the lights.
  • For use ONLY with the plug in Trailer Wiring Isolator 518190
  • NOTE: 2014 models are equipped with a new CAN-bus style wiring. You MUST also use an isolator, our #51-8190. This will draw all the power for the trailer lights directly from the battery and not adversely affect the CAN-bus system. This will plug into the sub harness.
  • IF the trailer you will be towing has a 5 wire system you MUST install this signal decoder part no. 518715. This will separate the combined CAN-bus signal allowing it to correctly operate the lights on the trailer.
  • An isolator is highly recommended to protect the motorcycles electronics from damage and provide full power to the trailers lights (Use without the isolator will damage the convertor.)

Hi James.... I have no info for you - just wanted to welcome you to TrikeTalk.

Hang on... I’ll bet someone chimes in pretty soon with some help.

I have a 2012 Tri. The J&P catalogue "says" this harness is good for all 1996 -2013 Touring models.

How many wires 5 or 4

This will make a difference

Most newer trailers with separate turn and brake lights run a 5 pin connector

When ever I do wiring like that before I hook up to the trailer I run the wires at the back side of the plug with a test light to be sure each light gets the right signal

I hate electrical problems

Most are traced back to a ground or 1 crossed wire

I do the same, usually with a battery charger and a small Allen wrench or ice pick. Hook the ground to the trailer and touch each pin for function.....except the ground pin!!

James, you say you did this on a 2002 and a 2006, were they two-wheelers ?

I think there is a 8-pin black connector from the motorcycle (trike) harness to the trike body. You can catch the signal there that should be uninterrupted. If you are trying to catch a signal after that plug it may not be working because the (new) harness is for a two-wheeler and not a trike.

I did one the other day for a fellow that had changed his taillights to LED and installed the aftermarket interconnect. His did exactly the same thing with his trike taillights. While I was at it, I made a harness for his (soon to be gotten) trailer plug.

I really don't know if this helps or not.

Yes, the 02 and 06 were 2 wheelers. I've been trying the connector that is under the seat, the one I've always used in the past. a You Tube video shows a guy using a connector that appears to be under the passenger hand holds, beneath a frame rail. Claiming it is the connector that goes to the tail lights. Are there 2 identical 8 pin connector plugs? T

he trailer and my trike have incandescent lights, no LEDs.

James, you should be able to make this harness and plug into your existing harness.

Unplug trike harness and check signals from running lights (blue & orange), brake lights (red), turn signals (brown & purple) upon application. If you get signals from all of these, this set up should work for a 5-6 wire trailer.

Ta-Daaa. As I suspected, I was using the wrong 8 pin connector. Instead of the obvious connector located under the seat: that I have used on my last 2 Ultras, I needed to use the 8 pin connector HIDDEN under the passenger handrails, beneath the cross-member!

Once I plugged into it....everything works as it should. Thanks for all of your guys help, jm.

Be safe out there.
