Anyone taken a Trike specific riding course. Was it worth the $200.00 fee (Florida). I've taken the basic driver course for my Florida motorcycle endorsement. Just wondering if the trike course teaches you things you thought you knew.

I never took the course, But I think it might be worth it. Especially for a new rider with out any experience with 3 Wheelers... Sure as hell can't hurt...

After my motorcycle crash in 2002 (my fault), my wife wanted me to take the rider safety course before I got back on a bike after a lengthy recovery. I did so, even though I had been riding for over 30 years already, and found out that I had forgotten (or just didn't know) a few tricks to riding safely. So it was worth the money to me. If they had a "trike" course here in Central Texas, I would take it and consider it good insurance for my continued health and safety, and those of others.

I was an MSF instructor in my past life. In 2011 I had my 1800 triked in July. In September when we went to the Wings Over the Smokies rally I signed up for the trike course. For me most of it was a repeat of the class I taught. However, I did learn a couple of things and got to practice techniques unique to a trike in a safe environment. Worth every penny to me. But, I'm prejudiced toward rider training. The @200 sounds high to me but I guess a state sponsored class is going to have a higher cost.

If you learn anything, it's worth the money, IMO.

Have fun, ride safe.

The problem as many have said is that there is not a trike course available for us to take. Even though I have taken the MSF course, and many things do translate, many things do not. Nothing that deals with turning applies to trikes. MSF should realize we are a fast growing segment. HD should realize it as well. Somebody.....

hay Juice they have a trike course here in Lufkin, Tx. it is the only one I know of a man named Marcus is the instructor he all so runs ( the cycle shop ) he installed my trike kit. nice guy he has classes on 2 wheeler, side cars and trikes Phone # is (936)637-7555 ride safe

Our community college has a MSF trike course that is 16 hours over 2 weekend days. One listing had the cost at $135.00 a person and another listing says to call for pricing. Not sure why it is that way maybe the costs go up if less people register for it?

The riders safety course I took was 16 hours over 2 days without allowing us to go to lunch. I am not sure I would do that again.

Trike Course here in the Socialist Republic of New Jersey through Rider Education of NJ runs $295.00
I'd be real happy to pay $200.00 although $135.00 sounds much better!

The GWRRA offers one especially for trikes. The Kansas Chapter has one scheduled in Wichita in April for trikes and another one later in the year for trikes with trailers. I bought my trike about a year and a half ago in Arkansas and rode it back to Kansas City then three weeks later rode it down to Oklahoma and took the GWRRA trike course. I thought it was well worth the time and money. The course in Oklahoma was around 50 dollars and the one in Wichita is less than that. Any money spent on training that might save a life is money well spent.

Thanks, that might be a good excuse for a trip to Lufkin!

And thanks to Zook (as always) for providing some great information!

I'm signed up for the next available course offered from my local Harley dealer. (Lone Wolf Harley in Spokane, WA) No date yet, but they only have one certified trike instructor, and are limited to 6 trikes at a time. The State of Washington requires a separate endorsement for a 3-wheeler, so it's kind of a high demand thing right now.

The store manager says they will start classes next week, and keep on going until the snow flies in the fall.

I started riding as a teenager & rode off & on for 50 years before getting a trike.

When I bought the trike it was in my head that they were inherently unstable so I took a really good MSF Course, one on one, instructed by Loyd VanDiver, 501-519-0061, who is the Motorcycle Safety Director for the Arkansas State Police. Loyd is a really thorough instructor and nice guy.

I also took a GWRAA course, also one on one and really good, instructed by Larry Pnepene (sp?) Of Russellville AR; 479-970-0778. Larry is a long time GWRAA instructor.

The Arkansas GWRAA, as I understand it, does trike safety courses whenever they have 6 or so people wanting to take the course. Larry did it with me by myself because he was scheduled for surgery was going to be out of commission for a while & he wanted to get it done with me just to be on the safe side - great guy.

I cannot say enough about how much these courses have helped me, both as to technique and being safe.

I used to race sports cars & thought I knew most everything until I had to go to school in the process of getting my ticket whereupon I fast learned that I mostly knew a lot of bad habits, a few of them dangerous.

I began welding when I was ten years old & thought I knew all about it until I retired & took a welding course at the local community college. I had been regularly doing some pretty stupid & dangerous things.

The problem is that riding a trike is something that looks pretty simple like driving a car and easily done without any instruction and doing so usually works pretty well unless and until something suddenly happens that you're not prepared for.

I have made it through several tight spots because of taking these courses. I might have been lucky and got through ok without having had the courses but maybe not. It can get too late to act real quick sometimes.

Has as there ever been any consideration of having a sticky thread on safety?

I have taken the MSF Motorcycle course and think it was one of the best things I have done. Now that I am moving up to a trike I would like to take the trike course. Does any one know where I can get it in central KY?

A few years ago I took the GWRRA Trike Course, don't remember the cost, but it was well worth it. Now the same instructor is teaching the MSF Trike Course.....$250. I'm scheduled to take it in a few weeks, and I feel it will be worth every penny of what it cost. For new riders, I believe completion of the course fulfills the driving portion for a motorcyle endorsement on your drivers license.
It is being offered in Killeen, TX....so there is someplace closer to Austin than Lufkin that offers the MSF course.
