trike resale

As I'm looking around and trying to answer the "do I build or buy" question I'm seeing asking prices for completed trikes that are most often equal to or greater than it would take to build one(including front end rake & paint). I have seen exceptions, but very few.

This has good and not so good sides to it, but I am really surprised (in this economy as well as in general) the asking prices (private or dealer) on completed trikes are not lower than the build costs. In my experience, custom builds on other types of items are usually always higher than whats available completed.

Is the resale-demand for completed trikes that good to support such high prices or are the only trikes on the market long enough to notice them those that are asking higher prices?

I'm thinking of a Valkyrie Interstate with a Roadsmith kit.

What's people's experience with resale on trikes relative to the build costs?

People's asking prices for beloved and somewhat rare vehicles are usually unrealistic. Also, most trikes for sale have a number of added accessories, and owners typically want unrealistic prices for those. Be sure you're including the (list) prices of the accessories in your comparisons.

Thanks for the thoughts..I'm surprised there aren't more comments as trading in/out/up/down must be fairly common. The search continues..

I just bought a 2002 Goldwing GL 1800 with a MotorTrike Kit on it with 31,000 miles with lots of stuff on it, dealer said trike was worth 26,900 Resale, I got it for less and am Happy with it.... I also did alot of checking around for used one...this guy can't keep them around, selling like mad, had 5 people wanting to buy my trike after i bought it.. Paul

And there you have it. A 2002 is maybe 10K, putting a Motor Trike on, maybe 9K. It's the "stuff" that makes up most of the difference.
