I know there was a thread some where on here but I couldn't find it. Regarding all of the warnings about the retractable lid cable. Well as carefull as I have been, mine broke tonight, completely ripping the hinges off of the lower box. The lid might be able to be saved, don't know yet. :Crap:

I went to Lowes. Bought a coupla feet of small but strong linked chain and a small package of picture hanging hooks that attach to the back of picture frames. Cut a length of chain about 14 inches long and put a hook on each end, slid one end in the bolt that holds the passenger back rest. Slid the other end in the center bolt in the lid that holds the upper passenger back rest. Now if that stupid cable snaps, my lid is going nowhere. Cost me about $3.00.

Think it was my thread Izski!! Welcome to the retractable lid cable breaking club:gah:
I had the chrome hinges on also. New lid cost $450 and replace all the parts from cracked to new $250!! Watch your tour box.....mine cracked couple weeks later. Had local paint shop repair/paint $300. Extended warranty folks won't help....they'll come up with some bull$hit excuse not to pay. Trent's going to help me put a chain on my stock cable...it could break also.

Sure would be nice if someone could figure out what size hydraulic closure would fit and then that would remedy all the issues of the lid slamming shut or the cable breaking and breaking the tour pack.

Can you post a pic when you have a chance?

I would be happy to post a photo,,,BUT...Since day one, I have never been able to get photos to work here via my computer. If someone here would like to volunteer to post it, I can email photos to anyone that can do it.

Hey Nana!! ( She did some for me once ) So did Zook...

I looked at these. $80.00 !!! for 3.00 worth of metal and ya gotta drill holes. I will prefer my 3.00 safety chain that connects to the exsisting bolts. I have made them for several of my Buds too.

All the money we spend on our trikes $80.00 sounds cheap.

I have the ultra brace after mine broke lucky no damage. The brace will do 2 things will keep it from opening to far and will keep it open without strain on the box while you are in there. Your choice.

And this also is a good point!

I have always questioned the very low attachment size on this forum. On my chapter forum I can post very large attachments - even 3 or 4 photos. Here, I can't even post a single 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper with text.

I also spent the money on a brace after mine broke. (no damage to box)
I never liked that it went over center and really stressed box at hinges. Even more when rack on top loaded. Like how brace holds it open.
But hey, that is just me ThumbUp

I bought the brace also. Buying two tour pac boxes was getting pretty expensive.

The brace locked is 10 and 1/4 Center to center of bolt holes. The opening of the tour pac is 22 and 1/2 in. Plenty of room for me to get anything I want in the tour pac. Hopes this helps.

You are certainly not the only one. I've tried many times, Fails every time

Long ago I purchased a tether wire to add to the existing one. My intention was to double up the existing tether to prevent breakage. Never installed it.

Gonna try to attach a pic, lets see how I do.

The server they are using doesn't have enough storage space. They were going to change servers a few months back, but I have seen nothing as a change for letting you even post a pix for your sig. NOTHING has changed ! Donate or not everything is the same !pepper

I went the cheap route with a 3/32" stainless cable. I drilled a 1/8" hole in the brackets on each end, made a "farmer eye" in the end of the cable through the 1/8" hole & put a stainless cable crimp on the ends. I left about 5/8" slack in the new cable so if the first cable fails the second will catch it. Then I put both cables through a 1/2" vinyl tubing so they can't get in trouble, & fold out of the way together. If I get ambitious I will put in surgical tubing in place of the vinyl for flexibility in cold temps.
All total LESS than $10 !

My tether broke also. Fortunately I had no damage. I think having the Tour Pak Premium Hinges ( Chrome Premium Tour-Pak Hinges-79211-08A | Decorative & Protective Accents | Official Harley-Davidson Online Store) helped as they do support the lid a lot better than the stock ones.
I also ordered the Ultra Brace from Eglidegoodies (Ultra Tour-Pak Brace). Just haven't installed it yet.
I guess I need to get it installed before the tether breaks again.
I see a lot of people just flip the tour pak lid up and let the tether stop it when it hits the end of it. My self I have always lifted it and when I reach the end of the tether then I let go of it.

I had the same thing happen to my TourPac, ripped the hinges completely off the bottom half. I think the bottom pan by itself was $575 dollars. My dealer replaced all since I bought the piece there and they installed it They reused all lights and hardware.

After reading all the comments I decided to order one of eGlideGoodies Ultra Tour Pack Braces. Went on their site and they wanted to charge $79.95 for the brace and another $13.95 for shipping for a total of $93.90. Didn't like that much shipping so I googled and J&P Cycles came up. They offered an immediate 10% savings to $71.99 plus only $7.95 for shipping for a total of $79.85. Figured I just saved $14 bucks.

My eglidegoodies Tour Pack Brace showed up yesterday and I installed in last night. Nice piece of work. I decided to leave my retractable tether installed just as a safety backup to the Brace. The only thing I could see going wrong with the Brace would be if one of the pivot point screws backed out allowing the Brace Arm to come unattached to the bracket.

Went to Menards and bought the hooks and chain. Installed them Sunday.
Here's a hint, if your hardware store only carries chain in longer then 3' lengths, go to the storm door section and buy a couple replacement spring assemblies for a screen/storm door at 69 cents each. The smallest Menards had was 10' for a #16 chain. Only needed 1-1/2'. Had to use a little longer screw on the bottom half due to the liner and seat back.

Looks great. Left the retractable cable on and made the chain just a wee bit longer as a backup. ThumbUp
