transaxle oil?

Hi all. I'm wondering what is a good gear oil to put in a vw transaxle? I don't know the year of my transaxle. All I know about it is its a swing axle and it was set up for 6 volt. The manual I have says 90 weight that I can't find at local auto parts stores in eastern Iowa. Research I've done has everyone saying 80w90 GL-4 not GL5
What do you guys say?
Thanks in advance.

Being a mechanical engineer and having to deal with oils and such....
GL-5 is not the same as GL-4. Different testing standards, some of the GL-4 test are not even included in GL-5 at all. There are some important key factors involved in these test, one of which is the yellow metal corrosive issue. I would not use anything that does not specifically state that it is safe for yellow metal.
That being said..... GL-5 is a much better oil overall, but is not REQUIRED to pass the corrosive test. That does not mean that some, or even all, modern GL-5 oils would not pass IF tested.
So.... I use .

It is rated for both. That means it passes the test for both grades.

That’s what I used…. Just like regular gear oil from the past. Non of that new fancy slick stuff. Not only for the corrosion issue, it needs to stick to the gears and parts. I also use Traveller brand oil from Tractor Supply in the crankcase. It’s like oil right out of the 1970’s.
