To All Our Vets...

Isn't it ironic that the individuals who protect freedom are now the enemy. Even the current Commander in Chief is guilty of degrading the military. How many posters volunteer to spend 5 years in prison camp?

Google the following and read some shocking material of the mistreatment of Americans during WWII: 'American POWs captured in Japan and Germany used as slave labor'. When I was in college a WWII POW discussed it in our history class about how the Germans exploited them.

My father proudly served in the Marine Corp during WWII and fought the Japanese. My high school sweetheart joined the Marines and went to Vietnam and never came home. In my high school class there were those who were drafted, those who enlisted and those who dodged the draft. Had one brag about his father's money and influence to keep him out of the military.

Not to make anything right , But the South Vietnamese [ARVN's] weren't much better, They didn't keep POW's around for long.;);)...And any that we captured we handed them right over to the ARVN's..

War is like someone once said; Is Hell....

So my guess is he wasn't lucky, got captured, tortured day after day, had no useful information and then they killed him. :( I think of him often.

My older brother joined the Marines and went to Vietnam. He was seriously wounded there and did die several years later, but he made it home. I can't imagine not knowing what happened and always wondering. Val, I am so sorry you don't have answers.

Hmmm, RTC Great Lakes, I do recall my experience at RTC San Diego, Beginning OCT 1951, yes, I'm an old destroyer sailor. Video brings back memories.

When i got on the bus [Army 65] There was this DI From the other United States standing next to a cardboard box and screaming, All you New Yorka's put all your switchblades and guns in the cardboard box before you'all get on the bus...

And i'm willing to bet that they really believed that everyone was carrying , Being that they came from the other United States and all.........And As us draftees came from NY those Corncobs DI's could never understand NY Sarcasm or why when they said jump we would ask why.........

We knew just how far we could push their buttons...I mean what were they gonna do, Fire us....Send us to Nam......

I'm betting the new volunteer military is better organize .....

Navy boot camp in San Diego, 1967. I considered the whole experience a crock of nonsense the purpose of which was to get your uniforms, teach the rudiments of Navy decorum, and some elements of (shipboard) life. Made it through the aircrew training schools (two additional that I volunteered for beyond the original plan), I got to my squadron where the real work was being performed and which I took seriously. Given the chance, I would do it all again plus take advantage of the opportunities the Navy offered, of which I admit I was too damn stupid at the time to take advantage.

Went to my first Reunion this pass week. It was 23rd Americal / 2nd Battalion 1st Infantry. My unit was B Co 2nd /1st of the 196th LIB. I was there 71/72 and was the only one from my year. Most of the B Co 2nd / 1st were 68/69 that were in country together. Hope to attend more in the years to come and maybe find some of my old buddies that were there at same time as me.

I had some contact with members of my unit after my tour in the 221st Avn Co, Soc Trang, 69-70. Reunions were a thing that didn’t happen. There were no more than 135 of us in the unit at a time. A web site was established and then we were able to track and contact each other. A lot of the members are no longer with us due to the ills of Vietnam.

Thank you you for your service.

Jim

This is a touching piece of film that has been made into a video. This one is not photo shopped, it's the real scene!

Notice in the opening shot you'll see the gunner's position is all shot to pieces while the pilot's cockpit ahead of it is undamaged.

Later, notice the corpsman taking a fingerprint of the deceased gunner before the film continues, then showing the chaplain saying the final prayers,

Followed by taps. Then the sailors push the aircraft and our patriotic airman over the side and watch it sink into the distance sea...

Don't forget to check out the various freebees for Vets on the 11th or 12th. One I ran across that's seems relatively unknown is Texas Roadhouse has a free lunch for Vets on the 11th. Free dinners include Applebee's, Golden Corral, Cotton Patch. Most have limited menus for these offerings, but still offer some good eats. Be sure to take a DD214 copy to be on the safe side. Too many are buying the various ballcaps that say they're a Vet, whether they are or not.

Reminds me of a time I was drinking beer with an army buddy. We both went to the restroom at the same time. When we finished he headed over to the sink, I headed to the door. He hollers at me, " in the army they teach us to wash our hands after we go to the bathroom." I replied back, " in the air force they teach us not to piss on our hands."

Now "that" a good one............:clapping:
