Thoughts about drilling stock mufflers

Anyone have any thoughts about drilling out the new 2012 tri glide stock mufflers for more sound? I don't know if I want to drill them or just buy some new mufflers. I need your ideas.

l'll bet Paw Paw is right about the Fuel Moto headers as the cat chamber must create a lot of restiction.

Tried knocking out the baffle in the long tour muiffles and they sounded real raspy.

Putting about a 3/4" hole in the shorty mufflers leaves enough muffling to give it the deep sound we like, but not too loud I think

Well I have decided to have the cat removed from the stock header pipes and see what it sounds like before doing any muffler work. I have been told that the cat can be removed from the stock head pipes for $195.00. I plan on having the cat removed after the 1000 mile service is done at the dealer.

On April 21st is the Flood Run along the Mississippi River and there sis always alot of bikes on this event. I will be there and on a mission of checking out the trikes mufflers and their sound.

There has been discussion about the O2 sensors cross-talking after removing the catalyst. The two O2 sensors are in the headpipes just before the cat. If I understand the stronger argument in the discussion, the cat itself helps keep the exhaust from one cylinder being read by the other sensor. Remove the cat and both cylinders end up in the chamber and can possibly confuse the feedback being sent to the ECU. The folks have talked quite a bit on the HD forum, Harley Tech Talk, and the CVO Forums. Read up and then decide if a couple hundred more is with the money.
 
I don't think I would modify the stock exhaust. The cross-talk problem with the O2 sensors is one consideration. Another is Uncle Sam. You never know when more environmental restrictions are gonna hit and you may be forced to reinstall a stock exhaust system. Running a gutted header would mean you'd have to buy a new replacement header from the moco. That cannot be very cost-effective.

I think you'd be better off (and probably happier) just buying an aftermarket header and storing away the original header in the event you ever need it.
 
+1 JohnC. Probably the most important point in the long run. I live in Kalifornia and take it for granted that it's a real good idea to keep all stock takeoffs just in case.
 
Excuse me for jumping in here,but i cut the cat out of mine.So how do i tell if it's cross-talking?What will it do that i would notice?
 
Before I knocked the cat. out of my head pipes I checked on the cost of a pipe with new catalyst just in case the feds continue their nasty ways. A pipe with new cat costs $787 for a Triglide. I'm still gonna replace the cat pipe with a free flowing one, but gonna save the stock pipe.

Arnie, are you running any kind of tuning device such as TTS, PCV, TMAX, etc.? Or are you running stock?
 
If you want a quick cheap fix go to nighrider.com and get his XEIDs..Its a cheap fix for now..It just fools the O2 sensors and supplies more gas..you can adjust and remove them real fast too..
 
I have the s/e air cleaner,wild pigs slip ons,& i do have the xieds.I have no problems with the way it runs,but just like everybody else i have an heat issue.Thanks for your responses.
 
If anyone is worried about spending $747 for a new cat head pipe, I have a brand new take off that I would sell for $100 and mite even throw in the mufflers. Now thats a steal!!
