74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Aug 4-10, 2014

I'm wondering how many TT members plan to go to the 2014 Sturgis Rally?

My plans are to "ride" to Sturgis on my Tri Glide & towing my Mini Mate Camper. This will be my first "ride to" Sturgis, all my previous trips have been trailered, but I have always wanted to make the "ride" at least once and if I don't do it in 2014 I may never do the "ride".

While there is more than enough of things to do & see at Sturgis I'm wondering if the TT members meet up together and do a ride together or something? Is this something that has been done in the past and/or is this something anyone would be interested in doing? Any info or suggestions would be great.

If there is some real interest in a get-together at Sturgis maybe this thread can be made a 'Sticky'.

I'm goin'! My group is staying in Wall next year, and we'll make the trip to Sturgis at least a couple times throughout the week. The rest of the time will be spent roaming the Black Hills and WY, as we did last summer. I'm the only triker in the pack, but it'd be great to meet up with some other TT members during the trip!

Yep, be my 29th year to RIDE to Sturgis. Rode up last year on my new '13 Tri-Glide pulling a Bushtec trailer (first time on a trike). Saw a lot of trikes this past year, many more than years past. Never saw anything on TT prior to riding up.

A 'meet' would be fun but hard to do IN Sturgis it's self. But saying that, Easy Rider has some large areas that could work. Have had a couple meets with V-twin Forum and HDForum members in Keystone.

2014 would be better than 2015, the 74th. 2015, the 75th they are anticipating a million people to hit the area. !!!!

good to hear from you guys, this will be my first Sturgis with my TG or any trike, always been on 2 wheels all the other times and it would be great to spend a little time with other trikers. There are so many things going on around Sturgis it would probably be easier & better to meet some place near but away from the crowds of Sturgis. We have time to make a plan & hopefully other TT'ers will express an interest in getting together, but 3 can be as much fun as 100.

Texan, you have made "The Ride" 28 times?!?! That is something I would like to be able brag about ThumbUppepper
I'll never come close to that amount, but hopefully this #1 will just be the start.

Hey guys,

I am planning the trip as well. I will only have to ride about 300 miles from where I am.

If a bunch of TT riders are planning to make the trip and we wanted to meet up somewhere, "4 corners" in Newcastle WY would be perfect for a meeting place. If we planned a meet/greet and ride, we could make the run down to Custer SD and over to Sturgis. The trip down the mountain from Newcastle to Custer is an awesome ride!

We usually spend the night in Cheyenne then head on into Sturgis the next day. Newcastle is our first gas stop. Heading home, at the end of the week, we stop at a GREAT breakfast place in downtown Newcastle. Can't remember the name of it but it's on the North side across from the theatre. GREAT good.

Cheyenne Junction would be a good meeting spot. Ride Spearfish Canyon down to Cheyenne grab a bite (they have the best carrot cake) then go on down to Newcastle or ride Spearfish back up to Sturgis.

My opinion however would be to figure out a spot IN Sturgis instead. Or maybe Deadwood or Keystone.

Tom,

Roadsmith Trike Conversions put on a ride called the T.O.U.R. (Trike Owners United Ride) last year during Sturgis week, their first, in appreciation for trike owners. It was such a great success that I'm sure they are planning to make it an annual event during Sturgis. I believe it will be held on a Wednesday (August 6th) as last year, with registration and initial meeting on the Main St. of Hills City early afternoon. If the same as last year, we'll ride to the Buffalo Chip Campground, just out side of Sturgis, approximately 60 miles, for an evening dinner, live entertainment, raffle and door prizes. The event was free to all trike owners that participated. May I suggest that this would be a good meeting place where we could discuss a later get-together, say the following day or the next. To distinguish ourselves, we could wear our TT or T.O.I. tee shirts, if we have one or display our T.O.I. membership or TT decals on our trikes. Or you are invited to send me a PM if so interested and I'll reply.

That would be perfect Texan. If you stayed in Cheyenne I could ride up with ya the next day! pepper

Don't know what day we plan to go up yet. We usually ride up on Saturday (2nd) and stay 'til the next Saturday (9th) but one of the guys is kinda wanting to go up Friday (1st). Use to stay at the Hitching Post 'til it burned. Now stay at MicroTel. Evening always includes a meal st Sanford's !!

Will let you know when the decision I made. Even if you're not going up the same day as us you could join us at Sanford's.

Talking about the Hitching Post; that was an insane day! I work directly behind where the Hitching Post was and it was pretty insane. Of course they found it was arson. Insurance deal LOL.

Sanford's is pretty good, but if you haven't ate at the Luxury Diner you have not ate awesome food!!!!! It is "down home" home made grub and is one of the best places to eat within 200 miles! It is pretty much right across the street from MicroTel.

They probably make the best smothered burrito in several states bar none! You will take a "go box" when eating there.

But yes, for sure keep me posted!!!

Daydreamer, Thanks for the info about T.O.U.R., I did some searching and found that they had 85 trikes & 125 people on the first annual ride. They plan to do it again and all trikes are welcome, that was one thing I wanted to make sure of.
I think using the T.O.U.R. as a get together is a great idea, what does everyone else think? Like you said we could fly our own flags & t-shirts and ride as a group. Everyone interested could make plans to meet-up again before the end of the rally.
If enough of us, from TT & TOI, sign up for the 2014 T.O.U.R. we can TAKE OVER and make it OUR ride!!
:D

I might also be interested in meeting on the way to Sturgis, that is something we can talk about & plan in the coming months.

Lets keep talking about this and hopefully we can make some plans.

Hey Tom.
I'm glad that you and hopefully others concur, that meeting during the T.O.U.R. might be a good plan for those of us that plan on making it to Sturgis this year for their Rally. I was in attendance during the T.O.U.R. last year and I thought our numbers were more than 85 trikes. It sure seemed that way, but Roadsmith's numbers are surely correct. No doubt that number will increase this year and each year that follows, as the T.O.U.R. becomes a major attraction, like the Mayors and Legends Ride has. Yes, I would like to see a good number of TT/T.O.I. members attend, but it's wishful thinking to think that we're going to make the T.O.U.R. "OUR" rally, well at least this year anyway...LOL.

Meeting up in route to Sturgis is a good idea but only can be accomplished on an individual bases, as we are quite a diverse group that will be coming in from literally all directions, have different riding styles and not necessarily on the same schedules. For example, I plan on leaving on the 3rd of August, which is a Sunday. I'm fortunate that I'm only about 400 miles away, so leaving in the AM will put me there by suppertime. Personally I like traveling on US and State Highways vs Interstates, if at all possible. I guess I'm an advocate for "that it's not the destination, but the journey" as my type of riding style. That being said, I welcome anyone that's coming in from the east, particularly north central MN and WI, to contact me through this forum. Let's keeping this topic ongoing as hopefully more and more of TT/T.O.I. members wish participate or inquire. Ride Safe...!!!

Camping around Sturgis during the rally, I know this has been covered before, but for some reason I can't find the posts I remember.
If anyone, that has been to Sturgis in the last year or 2, can recommend the name of a campground, let us know about it, the good & bad.

I actually have a pal, that is planning to go up this year, that has 5 acres between Newcastle Wyoming and Custer South Dakota. I am discussing the ability to camp in that acreage. If that works out, it would just mainly be TOI or TT members.

My pal also has a very large grill that can probably cook enough grub for 20 people at a time. :D

This could end up being a great gathering of members!!!

You can find all kinds of camping in and around Sturgis. Some people stay right in town, like we do. A lot depends on noise or no noise, walk to town or ride to town, use an outhouse or a porcelain stool. Take a hot shower every day or every 2-3 days. Some camp grounds bring in big semi shower and crapper units, some you fend for yourself. There have been several camp grounds popped up over the years where they just drag a bush hog over it, knock down the grass and rent out tent sites. Check 'em out before you pay.

15-20 years ago we stayed out at Glenco and the Chip. But my buddies all consume adult beverages to sometimes the extreme. So instead of riding back to camp, chancing an encounter with the judicial system, they now crawl back to their tent. Found a nice place to camp bout 10 yrs ago within crawl'n distance (5 blocks) of town. Easy access to town, I-90 or 16A.

Good luck......enjoy the adventure and don't forget to leave a few rides for the year. Ohhhhh and talking about rides, take your rain gear every time you head out into the Black Hills.

Texan, I know what you mean about all kinds of camping around Sturgis, the first time I came to Sturgis, in the early 70's, I 'camped' at the race track in the back of my van with my XR & my 'italian' HD 250 flat trackers!
BUT, what I was hoping for was the name & info about campgrounds TT members have used in the last yr or 2, so those that are still looking have a better idea what is really out there.

I'm curious of the name of the campground you stay at, I know there is the campground called No Name City RV, but in 1 post you mention that you stay at Microtel, in another you mention hwy 16a, which I think is around Mt. Rushmore, and you mention crawl'n distance of town. You've got me turned around & lost, care to share the name &/or location of the campground you stay at? :xszpv: :wave4:

That is a good suggestion about the rain gear, it is amazing how quick a storm will blow in when riding the Black Hills. ThumbUp

LoL !!! You're getting two post mixed up. We usually stay at MicroTel in Cheyenne headed up (eat at Sanford's) and MicroTel in Pueblo headed home. LoL !

We we now stay in the backyard of a family right off Main Street in Sturgis. They have a limited number of tent spaces and it's pretty muh the same guys for the past 10-12yrs.

If you google 'camp grounds Sturgis' you'll get all kinds of listings. Why not get brave and g0 out to Glencoe. A real FUN place to experience Sturgis. 1-800-272-4712

You and I started going to Sturgis bout the same time. When I first went up in the early '70's when the whole thing was in the city park. Trying to remember what year there were 2-3 guys shot in the park. Now that made an interesting weekend. I use to tent-it out south of the race track.

Texan, I had it pretty well figured out, that's why I said "and/or location", but I thought it would be more fun to post it the way I did, just being a wize azz!:cxtv::wave4:

The real joke is, the first year I went I didn't even know about real reason all the bikers were in Sturgis, I thought they were there to watch us race!:D:qpnmt::laugh: And even after that it took me 4 or 5 years before I went downtown to check everything out, if it wasn't a race bike I could have cared less. :xzqxz::gah:

If I remember correctly, it was shootings & fights that was the spark that created the Buffalo Chip & places like it, the crazy bikers needed a place to stay & Sturgis didn't want them 24 yrs a day all rally long.

I know its late but I would like to ride to Sturgis this year. All the lodging is very expensive does anybody share lodging? I am 72 years old and my wife will not be going. Also would like to ride up with someone, I live in the Kansas City area. If you would like to share lodging or ride let me know.

Jerry

If we get enough interest and a couple of you guys are willing to organize this, we will put it into our annual events roster and publicize it. Marge & I have our hands full as it is so its up to you to pull it together, but we will attend and help. We have already been invited to participate with the Roadsmith guys at their T.O.U.R. event at the Buffalo Chip including some on-stage time to promote TrikeTalk.com and T.O.I. and also have a standing invitation for a Lehman tour and mini-meet-greet at their facility. You might say we're pretty well connected with all the trike manufacturers and enjoy a great friendship with them all. I think it would be a lot if fun. What say you?

Hi again Jerry, Its not too late & glad you found the spot. I'm going to Sturgis this year and may be coming thru the KC area to get there. There is plenty of time, we can stay in touch or someone else might be looking for a riding partner. I'm going to be camping so I can't help with sharing lodging unless you bring a tent. What are you riding to Sturgis, I'm riding my '11 Tri Glide, towing my Mini Mate camper.

... What say you?

I'm not sure, it seems it's too hard to get you to answer or reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Zook, I just couldn't pass that up. :D You were far nicer to that person then I would have been.

As far as Sturgis, we have time & this thread is starting to get attention, so we'll play it by ear. I will be at the T.O.U.R., so I'm hoping we will have good group from TT & TOI.
I plan to make a 2 flag poles fixture for my hitch, does TT & TOI have or sell flags that I can fly on the T.O.U.R.?

ATTN: If you send a PM or email, I get dozens per day, so I may just not answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D:laugh:;)

I'll be riding 2002 Goldwing. Only had it about a month. I seen some camping site had tents for rent. Camping is about all I can afford. Looking forward to the ride. Let me know what's going on.

Randy,

I was glad to see that you have an interest in this event and will be attending the T.O.U.R. this year. I've personally communicated with Tom, (aka 92fxsts) who started this thread, suggesting that the T.O.U.R. might be a great place for TT/TOI members to meet up for a get-together that were planning on making the Sturgis Rally. I personally attended the T.O.U.R. last year and can say with no hesitation, that I thought it was a great success. I also met and have a personal relationship with Kirk Rush, one of the major organizer of the T.O.U.R. with Roadsmith. I'm also the TOI coordinator for SD. I would be happy to lend my support with the organization of TT/TOI meet/ride during this event. ThumbUp
