Stallion tranny went out on me this morning

My stallion tranny went out on me this morning on my way to Hogrock motorcycle rally. It the shifted real hard going into 2nd gear while pulling away from a stop sign then slipped in 3rd gear so I had to limp back home manually shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I called and spoke with Richard and he listened to the tranny slipping over the phone. And now he and I are trying to find somewhere to have it looked at because the Ford dealers around here won't touch it. Thankfully for me it is still under warrenty. I will keep updating my status. Has anyone else had any transmission problems?

Not yet, thank God!! Sorry to hear of your problems with your Stallion's tranny. What year is your Stallion '09 or '10, how many miles do you have on the odometer and finally have you changed the fluid since you've owned it?

Year: 2010
Miles: 13,000
Tranny Fluid has not been changed and shouldn't need yo be yet.
I'm the original owner and I bought it new.

Scrounging around on the internet for reliability of the Ford 5 speed automatic transmission, I found a wide range of opinions and experiences. Keeping in mind that most reports were based on the Ranger truck, and the loads and beatings that you would be expecting a truck, the tranny seems quite reliable. Most recommend changing the fluid every 30K miles. Failures seemed to be between 85,000 and 300,000 miles. One of the more common failures mentioned was the shift solenoid failure from 2nd to 3rd gear. Again, this was after at least 80,000 miles and hauling much greater loads than that of the Stallion. Basically, I think the type of failure Metaldad experienced is very rare and not a source of concern across the board. (Still made for a bad day for Metaldad.)

Thanks Shawn. I have called all around a 75 mile radius and only one shop still does transmission repairs or rebuilds everyone else will only to swaps. The nearest AMCO repair is Chicago. Anyway Richard wants it checked for minor damage but if is internal he is going to send a new one to swap out but the one shop can't even look at it until next week. I have been told it is a good transmission so I'm not sure what happened because I had no warning and I am the only one that drives/rides it.

Metaldad: try contactin Golf Mill Ford Niles, Ill. Mr Chris Fanella Service Mgr. & mr Bill Giers Service Director.. Absolutely great service Call 847-470-9800.. speak only to them ok to say I refered you as they take care of all my Ford & Stallion products Charlie D,

My guess is it it just a shift solenoid. In the world of transmissions, that is an easy fix. In fact I just did one on a C5 Corvette transmission a couple of weeks ago. About a 3 hour job to replace all the solenoids. Internet instructions, a 2 Post Lift, and a few tools made it no big deal. Hopefully you will be in and out off the shop in no time. Good luck.

Well my transmission was scanned for codes and the only code was for a sensor.

After talking with the mechanic he said what he has seen most of the time when tearing a ranger transmission apart is the drive / gear wheel (excuse me for not remembering the exact name of the part) is broke and not the $58.00 sensor.

He showed me another transmission he was working on and the gear / wheel is slotted and the sensor counts how fast between the slots and this tells the transmission when to shift. He said this part will break and or get stuck but my speedometer will work fine. The mechanic says he will have to tear down the whole transmission not just the front half like people think. He is completing an estimate to send to TMS for approval but he recommends just replacing it to avoid any future issues.

Richard is going to contact a large Ford Dealership in Chicago to compare the estimate (I agree he should) but to also seek information why a new transmission has failed with so little miles maybe there is a recall.

My wife and I WILL NOT BE HAPPY / SATISFIED UNLESS WE HAVE A NEW TRANSMISSION INSTALLED WHILE UNDER WARRENTY! We don’t want to cause more financial problems to TMS but this has happened only 700 miles after the break caliper issues I had when the stallion broke down the last time we used it and it cost me a lot of money for a hotel while it was getting repaired.

My wife is physically challenged and the last thing we need is for the transmission to go out again while she is with me. My son was with me and not my wife the breakdown before this one and thankfully this last time I was alone.
I don’t want to start questioning the reliability of the stallion and end up being afraid to travel very far from home because we bought it for her to get back out and enjoy riding again. Hopefully Richard will get the authorization to install a new transmission and the major issues will be behind us. We still love our Stallion for now. Brent

Well after three and a half months and three different service garages with our Stallion down we seem to have it fixed. Yes it was frustrating not riding because my wife and I are both physically challenged from a motorcycle wreck in 2008 so this was the reason for the trike in the first place. TMS were great during the whole situation in the end we had a new transmission and computer installed and a lot of adjusting to get everything dialed back in. TMS wàs very close to trailering it down to their factory but a very good shop in the Quad Cities called Hammer Cycles buttoned everything up the other two shops couldn't. Hammer Cycles is ownes and operated by Dave and he has specialized installing motor trike kits for over ten years. Richard at TMS is going to go through our stallion when we make a special trip down there for a piece of mind. They say we just happeñ to get a bad tranny from the start.
