Shifting CLUNK/CLANK

I know that Harleys shift hard and noisy. Mine shifts like butter when cold. No noise or first gear jump at all. Let the puppy come up to temperature and it's a different story. Jumps when put into first, and clangs/bangs it way up thru sixth...Same story when downshifting.

Clutch has been adjusted several times by dealer and he says all is normal.. Something is changing when it heats up. I know things expand when hot, but what could be doing this to cause the change in shifting?

Would appreciate any and all thoughts.

I am guessing that oil viscosity has sumpin to do with it. Also, they do have a tendency to be more noisy until broke in, I don't know how many miles you have on it-but it might get better. If you are using 20-40, or 10-40, I would put 20-50 syn in it. Good luck and keep us posted-I am curious about this, my HD roadking 5-speed is and always has been clunky (28,500 miles).

HI

Try this in the tranny "Red Line 58204 Heavy ShockProof Gear Oil' I notice a big difference in volume of the Harley Clunk. Amazon has it. Ride Safe!:wave4:

Not saying this is the problem, but my wifes TG had an issue getting into gear at times. When I rode it I really had no issue. Then after a few more thousand miles I started having some problems getting it into gear too.

The dealer did the first service on it and put synthetics in all three holes. First thing I went after was the tranny oil, I put Formula plus in it one time then some heavier gear oil the next with the same result. I then decided to go after the primary. I put in 32 ounces of Mobil 1 10w40. Same issue. I then went and got the manual out and it called for 38 ounces (wet) in the primary. That did the trick for her. So I can only guess the dealer had not put the 38 ounces in it when they did the service.

It was fine before the service.

Good luck
