Champion reverse clunk

If I put my transmission in reverse while the motor is running it makes a loud clunk. I was thinking this might either be normal or a clutch adjustment issue.

Do all the Champions clunk going into gear?

I have the 5 speed transmission.

It may help to adjust the clutch...Does it jump when you engage reverse??

I have a 6 speed w/Champion Reverse. I run Red Line shock proof in the transmission...no more clunk when putting bike into reverse.
There is a long thread concerning the different types of fluids. Red Line worked for me.

According to the instructions Champion recommends that the user pull the clutch lever in and place the transmission into 1st gear, this stops the transmission from spinning. Still holding the clutch in, then shift into reverse and then put the transmission into neutral (use neutral light as a reference). Using the reverse gear to stop the transmission will eventually cause damage to the Reverse Gear unit.

I have Redline VTwin in the tranny already. I usually put it in reverse before I start the motor to prevent any clunking.

I will adjust the clutch and see if that helps. I did call Champion and they mentioned putting it in 1st gear first, but I didn't think that was the best answer. It's not too much of a problem as I only use reverse to back out of the garage, so shifting into reverse can be done with the engine off. It's the rare occassion that I need to back up with the engine running that I was concerned about.

I will try the 1st gear method again as I did it wrong when I tried it. I put it in 1st, then neutral, and then reverse.

I'll tell you what crazy thing I do... Before I start the Bike.. I put it in Reverse.

I make sure that the Green Neutral light is on and what not, put the bike in Reverse and I never get a "clunk"

If you are one of those people that likes to start their bike and "warm it up" I think you'll have to shut your bike down to get to step one....

I use the First gear method once in a while.. but mostly I just start it in REVERSE.

If everything is adjusted correctly the reverse has no problems, its the same as when you hear the clunck when shifting into first..
I have had the Champion reverse on my bike for years and have never done some of the things I have been reading..I just put it in Neutral and move the handle..It may clunk a bit and release the clutch and off I go in reverse..

I going to play around with the adjustment a little. Like I said earlier I usually put it in reverse with the engine off, so I won't ruin anything.
