Shifter box mounting

Any ideas on mounting my shifter box? I have seen them mounted with the front still open and the bottom still open as well. Any concerns with leaving them open? Pics would be very helpful:Shrug:

Mine is open. But it is bolted to the top of the engine case and under the gas tank.
If there was any way I could I would use a buggy super shifter. Just don't have the room for it.

I haven't had my trike long enough to know what I'm talking about, but mine is mounted on it's side under the seat with the bottom open. I've ridden in the rain a couple times with no problem. But now I'm wondering what a buggy super shifter is and what does it do.
Thanks for your time

I've left the shifter totally open (no box whatsoever, just a mounting plate) on hundreds (really) of VW trikes I've built (or had my fabricating team build). I built my first one in 1971 and many others in my garage mostly for my friends. Had a factory building NovaTrikes for many years - and every shifter was mounted totally open with never a problem. Just liberally grease the ball and socket parts of the shifter and weather won't wash that away.

Good looking build!
