Roadsmith Braking

Two things in addition to the above posts:

1. Install pedal "cover" which will broaden surface of pedal and make it much easier to apply more force.

2. RS has some high performance "yellowstuff" brake pads by EBC in stock. Friend and I have both installed these and believe performance improved by 30%. They tend to grab and stop really fast at first but smooth out after a 1,000 miles or so. Easy swap out and believe they are well worth the money.
Just ordered a set from Taylor at Roadsmith. If U want some get them from Roadsmith. The price is much better than over the counter auto parts shops. Was told they are made and from England and are high performance pads.

Can I ask what they charged? I ordered mine from a car place and it was about $68 including shipping. I think there must be a run on them, since they are on back order and, yes, it's an English company that makes the pad.

Make sure the pads have the shim attached to the same area the pad is attached to so the piston will hit dead center....

Rex above said $49.00 + shipping from Taylor at Roadsmith / 1-800-331-0705 ask for Taylor Young

That is a good price. Nice to see they are not gouging. Champion charges about $100 for set you can get online for about $40 or so and they don't work very well.

Yellow compound break pads. I have about 700 miles on the new pads which I had put on about a month ago. If they do improve stopping, it is just a little bit. Next time I"m out (if we ever got over winter - spring is only 21 days off), I'll try a panic stop, and see how good they do.

They are not at all an expensive change, so maybe it will be worth it.

Keep us informed, still braking mine in, got side tracked with other duties.... yes honey I'm coming!!!

ThumbUp

Thanks for the link to "how to bed your new brakes." I just got a new RS trike, with about 200 miles on it since I got it.

Yesterday, I noticed one of the discs was only showing contact with the pad on about 1/3 of the surface. I was quite concerned, and stopped by a tire and brake shop and had them look at it. They won't work on bikes, but looked at it anyway. The mechanic said I should probably take it to a motorcycle dealer and have it evaluated. The mechanic was quite young, and admitted he was not real expert on brakes. Based on what the EBC article you posted above, it sounds like I should keep riding a while, and see if the brakes don't set themselves, without any outside help.

Does this sound reasonable to everyone, or should I go ahead and take it in for an inspection?

Sounds right if you RS Trike only has a couple of hundred miles... Hopefully its new enough to have the New EBC pads, it will take awhile to get them bedded, just follow those instructions and it should be fine. Congrats on your choice of Trike.... because I own one they're the best!!!

Finally got around to putting the Yellowstuff pads and the larger rear brake pedal on yesterday as well as a full brake bleed on the Champion. Went out for a quick scoot yesterday and all seemed good. They need to be broken in properly, but already braking seems better. Thanks to Solidbob for his suggestions.

My EBC yellow compound pads now have about 1100 miles on them and now they are noticeably improved over stock pads, but even standing up, I am unable to lock up the brakes, as if I really want to. I think they were very slow in braking in.

I'm glad I put them on. I have the modified larger brake pedal, which I'm sure that helps.

I am going to trike a 95 GL1500SE with a Roadsmith kit and I am very interested in this thread. Can you get the additional brake level pad for the 1500?:gah:

It is the rear break on the Roadsmith that is the issue. Don't worry about the GL1500. Ever whom builds the Roadsmith kit, be sure they put in the yellow compound break pads.

Thanks for the tips guys. I took the wife's trike and did a few emergency stops. It is a brand new trike with 1700 clicks on it now. I do know that RS does move the brake pedal up one notch for this. Do you think it may be possible that there is air in the system? They don't really feel spongy though.
My Roadsmith installer asked if I wanted the brake lever moved up one spline. At the time, I said no and if I wanted it done, I could do it myself...Well today, I decided to make the move. WOW! What a difference. Much better braking action now.

What torque setting did you guys torque your rear wheel lug nuts to?
I believe the conversion shop said 75 Ft-Lbs but I don't remember. I guess I could call em.

I have same braking problem with my 2008 Goldwing Roadsmith. I have written to Roadsmith three different times but have never received a reply. I am interested in the new pads that might increase the rear braking quality. Is Roadsmith still in business?

You need soft pads, not the ones with warranty

On my Mercedes 300 D, used soft carbon pads, they lasted around 18000. miles. Rotors looked like new. May add that car could stop.

The above braking problem was on page 1 and I believe as been handled with Roadsmiths new EBC Yellow Stuff pads.

Torque specified by Roadsmith for their wheels is 75 ft#..... in the manual....

The Yellow EBC brake pads are now standard equipment on ALL of our 18 models, so you'll be sure to get those when you order your HT1500 kit. As with most pads there is a small "break-in" period, but after they are seated they provide excellent stopping power. As always, feel free to give us a call if you have any other questions, and thanks for considering Roadsmith! ThumbUp

Finally, I got to install the EBC Yellow Stuff rear pads.
It made a definite difference in braking for sure.
Once I had them on, I bedded them and noticed an immediate improvement in rear pedal. The old pads were like the previous pics in that only half the original shim was being hit by the piston. Also, the EBC pads are not quite same height on the top as the originals allowing the anti-rattle spring to be loose. Not sure if any of you other guys ran into that.
Between these pads and the bigger pedal cover, I'm now content with the rear brakes on my RS.

I had my '06 Goldwing triked September 2013 at Niehaus Cycle. How can I tell if I have the yellow EBC pads? How can I get a replacement if they are not installed? Do I need to return to Niehaus to have this done (500 mile round trip)?

I have the 2012 RS install over a 2005 GW, do I have the yellow EBC? What year did you begin the yellow EBC brake pads?

I have the same year conversion as you and I don't have the yellow pads. I believe that they were first offered toward the end of 2013, I think,,,.

Thanks Rich, not sure I'd get a response from RS. Might get better rear breaking power with the new pads, but at what cost?

I don't think they cost that much. Another Roadsmith member here, BlueRibbon (Bill) recently bought those yellow pads from Roadsmith. He also mentioned that they seemd to offer better braking but only after putting some miles on them to fully seat the pads to the rotors. I haven't changed mine over,,, yet. After adjusting my brake pedal higher along with a pedal shim from Roadsmith the further raises the add-on brake pedal cover and also shifts it outward a bit, I have more leverage to apply greater pressure. At present, I'm satisfied with my rear brakes. Would I like even more stopping power form them? Absolutely! I might make that a winter addition. We'll see,,,.

I haven't been to the RS web site yet, but is the shim listed there for purchase? I have my foot brake raised as far it will permit, and still find the thing with my foot. I need to try the shim....

No, it's not listed there. You have to call Roadsmith and ask for it. When I get home later, I'll take a close up picture of it if you'd like.

OK Thanks Rich. By the way, here's a response I received from RS, Bear Lake about the EBC 'yellow' pads.....

Hi Bill,

The Yellow EBC brand brake pads became standard equipment sometime around the middle of last year, so your 2012 would most likely not have them. The reason we moved to those pads is because the pads from our supplier (for years) had somehow changed in quality, and us along with a number of other companies were experiencing customers with poor brake performance. That is what caused us to make the switch to the EBC pads. If your brakes seem to be working fine I would just leave them be until you need to change them, and then you can order the EBC brand from us if you wish.

If I can be of further assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or by phone at 800-331-0705.

Kind Regards,
-Taylor

Greetings, in addition with the stopping power (or lack thereof), has anybody experienced brake squeal? For a trike with 3000 miles, it squeals like a pig when applied.

Well today I finally put on the ebc pads, they where not yellow and I called Taylor at roadsmith,he said they where the same . Anyway after I read the post on here,I jacked the trike up and changed both sides . The right rear tire was a bear for some reason to put back on . After I got it back on the ground and tightened the lug nuts , I took it for a test --- WOW ,they weren't even broke in yet ,they have always felt like air in the lines. They improved rear stopping by 40-50 % ,they have always felt like air in the lines I'll still bled the brake lines, even thou they where supposed to have been done a year ago by the dealer . The old ones were still very good ( I've only put 6k on it ,its got 20k total now), and like other said the shim was covering half of the rear backing plate. So hoping in 1k-1200 miles I can lock them up if need arises . Now I'll have to get back in the habit of using the rear again. Thanks for all the input you guys put in here ,it really helps out!!
