Road it yesterday

Took the Trike out for a ride, about 35 miles, and I'm very pleased. Need to check the speedo, looked down and was surprised I was going 70 in a 55. Didn't feel like 70. Lots to do yet. Still having fun.pepper

Well my friend that is surly a different looking ride, Whats the plan for the back end?

I have seen tents that extend off the back of a pickup and there are an assorted choice of things you might do?

Thanks everybody, here is a list of my last activities on the build and some explanation of where I'm going with the build. I've had very little back tracking so far.(list is from another site I'm on)
Hi Everyone, I've been doing a lot of things that won't show in pictures to get the project road worthy(to reduce Head Wobble that was a little more than bothersome), and some things that will.
New outer wishbone bearings on the IRS.
Corrected a loose inner wishbone mount.
Alignment of wheels to frame and each other.
Installing the four Progressive 416s in place of the coil-overs and plumbing to the GL onboard compressor.(some frame rework)
New Progressive Fork Springs+spacers to regain ground clearance.
New fork seals and dust seals.
New All Balls Head Bearings.
Adjust steering effort to slightly above spec.
Scraped the idea of the combo electric reverse/alternator drive.(Back-Track, Budget took a hit on this)
Turned spacer with pilots to replace pulley for that set-up.
Installed Fuel Cell.(not plumbed)
Installed Fenders.
Put Covers back on.
Removed the Anti-sway bar.(Back-Track, not a big hit, don't think I'll need it. If I do it will need to be a lot lighter.)
Probably a few more things, anyway, I road about 35 miles yesterday and am very pleased with the outcome. Going to check the speedo with a GPS, looked down and was surprised I was doing 70. (didn't feel like it) lots more to do. My Grandson says he riding to Canada!

Ran out of room in previous post.
The computer image I did before I started to get a feel for the project, finish will be something like that.
The void in front of the IRS will be trunk space and the void beside the fuel cell might be an auxiliary battery location.(if I do the add on alternator).
The bed will lift to provide fuel/trunk space access.(Trunk will have a sealed lid) I have Harley Police seat that's shaped like the Cross Bones seat I have mounted but a little larger that will mount on the bed, a little higher in a kind of King/Queen setup. Hopefully Queen will get a back and arm rest if I can make it look right. Thanks for the interest. Perry

Wheels, you keep goin my friend, lookin good on Big Red! Yes, the rain stopped and we are to get a little snow tonight. Won't stick, just a reminder. I'll do the speedo check on our street so I don't have to ride the mud road to the Highway. If it's good at 25, it should be good at 70.(I think)

Can't wait to see it done. I would think about 35 MPH would give a better indication of true speed. Most are off by 5 MPH. Yes at 60 on a Gold wing trike it feels like u are doing 30. At 95 it is a different story however. Speedo should not be effected by the trike mod. Speed comes off the front wheel.
BTW that looks like a 1200 wing. If it is , I would do the alternator modification if it has over 45,000 miles. To really make it bullet proof the Poor boy mod using a Geo alternator would be a permanent fix.

PS don't forget to come back often and keep us posted.

Hi John, Yes it is a 86 GL1200A married to a 84 Jaguar XJS IRS. Does that make it a 85? 76000 on the clock.
SO, I went out and moved the truck, momma's car, Trudy the Ural, the shop crane, welder, stool and stuff, set up the GPS, turned it on, started the trike, BOTH READ 0 MPH. YIPPEE!(It's cold outside and spitting snow) Test completed? No, I did ride it, curvy streets so only got to about 22 MPH watching both. Trike was mostly 1 to 2 MPH faster, more than likely because the GPS is cutting the curves and I'm not sure if the Front Tire is stock size. When the mud dries I'll take on the highway just to find out what the % difference is.(if any)
Got a price on piping the Harley mufflers with stainless (not polished) from a local shop, $300 for two 6' pieces with 5 bends each and a cross piece. Ouch, going to have to wait, may just keep the GL exhaust and extend them.
Next step I think will be a cardboard mock-up of the lower body and bed to evaluate "cool or ugly" and try to achieve cool.
I have a nice new Denso mini alternator for the poor boy conversion if I can't figure a different way to drive it. The idea of my electric bump drive/charging set-up was to have segregated systems, one for the GL, one for any accessories, lights, heated clothing and anything else that might come up. I guess with the poor-boy and larger battery back by the fuel cell I would still be OK, maybe better.
It's a fun project and one I've needed for a long time, thinking of naming it "Learning Curve". I'll be keeping you posted. If any are interested, I can post some pictures of my set-ups and brief descriptions. Perry

Perry, I'd be interested in more! ThumbUp

Hi Rick, Sure thing, I've started getting some pictures off my phone and when I get them resized I'm thinking of starting a thread in Honda Trikes on the history of the build to date, maybe do it in a few different posts so it won't get boring.
As for the lesson that "Learning Curve" taught me today, don't take a 10.5 mile test ride with 6.3 miles worth of gas and fumes combined. You meet the nicest people on a Honda! Harley boy in a red truck named Darrell stopped right away to check on me and said "I'll get you some gas".
He was back in 5 minuets and I only let him put about a pint or so in, he didn't leave until I was running. Good people everywhere! He wouldn't take anything, great guy.
Test ride was to check speedo to GPS through a range of speeds on a straight course, came up with about 10% across the board.
30/GPS-33/Trike, 50/GPS-55/Trike. Didn't check the front tire size yet, could be a little larger than stock. Thank you for your interest Rick. Perry
P.S. This is my sidekick, or was for the last few years so her folks could go to work. She grew up, now I put her on a big yellow school bus with her big sister. Man I miss her during the day!
