I am looking into getting a Motor Trike Kit for my Honda VTX 1300c. I am wondering what the thoughts are from other trikers on how well you can maneuver it without a Reverse? In other words is it worth triking out a 1300? Also, does it need to have a rake kit put on it?? OOPs, one more thought- I have 2" Cobra Drag Pipes that I would hate to lose. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Yesterday, I went and tried out a Can-Am Spyder RT-now I'm torn in making the right decision.

Hi Kandie. If you are in good health, you will do fine without reverse. I rode a Fat Boy/Champion trike for 6 years, and am now on a V-rod/Hannigan trike. I did not have reverse on either one and did fine. The trike rolls easily in neutral on flat ground (no concern of tipping, of course), and if there was a slope, I just made sure I parked where I could ride straight out or backed into a spot so I didn't have to push it uphill. Anyway, if you decide you want it later, reverse can be added at any time.

DEFINITELY get the rake kit! It is much "heavier" to steer without it, and also rougher in slow turns. The rake kit kinda gives you power steering, and eliminates a good bit of the roughness in the front end at slow speed.

Sorry, I can't speak to the exhaust.

Kandie:
I agree with Nana, the trike rolls easy on flat ground. Park like you do with 2 wheels. I have a 1800 VTX, 2 years never had a problem.

Kandie,

Although what Nana and Coach told you is absolutely true regarding a trike being very easy to roll backwards on flat ground, if you have any slope at all and you have a gravel driveway (like I do), it's going to be a bit of an effort. (my area is very uneven and/or hilly) Take it from me, when I had my Valkyrie trike, it actually became a science as to how to position the trike so I could get her to roll back into the garage. If the trike had aqua shields, it would've been a real 'pia' not being able to put my feet down to aide in pushing backwards. Most of the time, I'd just get off the trike and push her backwards by the front fork. Now as far as a rake is concerned, that has to be one of the most beneficial upgrades you can do for a trike!!! Like many have described, it's like going from a truck with standard steering, to a sports car with power steering. Your arms and shoulders will thank you for installing the rake and I ave no doubt, it will add enjoyment to your riding time! ThumbUp

Yes Trike'n out a 1300 VTX is a good thing!

The Rake kit in my opinion is a great Idea as it equates to less wear and tear on you the driver therefore making it a better ride and a better day for you! The reverse gear on a 1300 is the one thing I believe you can live with out... Two reasons: 1. the VTX 1300 is pretty lite so in most cases you won't have to get off the trike to roll it back. If you plan a head a little you'll never have to get off to push it back. 2. It's not going to tip over and crush you or your passenger while pushing it back... It's a TRIKE!

Bottom line... GO FOR IT!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I am waiting for my local dealer in Potsdam, NY to get back to me on a quote for a Motor Trike Kit for my VTX. I am also thinking the best route for the rake kit is going through Bazooka on this site for $695.00.

I wouldn't take anything for my reverse. Don't have a rake kit, just takes a little effort and I need all the exercise I can get. On the rake kit (at least on a Harley) I don't the way the front fender points up at the front. Both of these can be added at anytime, ride it a few months and see what you think.

There isn't a reverse made for the VTX1300 trike anyway, so it really isn't a factor... rake is beneficial, but be ready for the responsive/light feel in the front end. Like the rest said, you just gotta be more aware of how/where you park for backing up purposes.

Got a 1300 mtr trike for wife. backing just requires planning, otherwise you're fine. previous comment correct-no reverse available, don't really need anyway however your pipes might be another story. If you want the sound, I'll give you what they used to come stock with. warlord dual straights w/baffles @ adapters to stock headers. you pay postage. wife wanted quiet, so adapted to small car muffler
