Recommendation for Using CarPlay w/out Sena on Half Helmet?

Hey. I like to use CarPlay for music and navigation on the bike. I have the WHIM installed and use the Harley Sena headset with my full face, modular helmet. Works great. But as it is getting warmer, I’m looking for an alternative that will allow me to still use my CarPlay with a half helmet. I know the issue is an Apple issue as accessing CarPlay requires a microphone.

So just curious if anyone has found an alternative or hack outside of just bringing the Sena and throwing it in the trunk 🤣, which allows me to listen to music but not hear the directions or communicate with my husband while we are riding together.

Thanks.

Take it off to let more air into your modular helmet. Do not go to a half helmet unless you're willing to sacrifice the bottom half of your head and face to the road surface.

All I've ever worn is a half helmet and not that in free states.

Uh....thanks. Not helpful, but thanks. I guess. LOL.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound flippant. The folks with the Tri-Glides seem to gravitate to this kind of stuff. I'm sure one of them will have a useful answer for you once they log in and see the posts. Good luck.

You can install your headset on your half helmet. Wife and I use Cardo. We have two sets of helmets - half helmet has a set.

Thanks. Sena doesn’t really have a decent install option for the half helmet. How do you both like the Cardo, which I know does? Thanks.

We really like our Cardo - use them for different operations. I decided to not go with the WHIM. So, for short or local trips, we use our Cardo. A number of folks in our chapter use wireless, so we can connect.

For long trips and those out of town, we use our wired headsets. We prefer this so we can use our CB radio. For the overnight trips, it seems that all of us have CBs.

I considered going with the WHIM - if I do, I can use the Cardo - but, it is mono. Plus, I will also lose the wired capability.

I use the wired set up just fine with my half helmet... probably would work similarly with WHIM.

I installed a headset (with microphone to utilize CarPlay) and removed the internal speakers (just cut them off) and set the BOOM system to play music, coms, CB through the external speakers.

CarPlay, Siri, CB all work as well as with my full face.

i just don’t hear everything as clearly cause you’ve got wind noise in play, but that’s the small sacrifice you pay to go with the half helmet.

Don’t know if this would help , but there is a CarPlay jumper on Amazon that might do what you need

Hey JGR … this Sena system works perfectly in the 1/2 helmet. Check it out at Sena for all the specs. Hope this gives you some help. This is the 2up setup or 2 bike setup. They make a single unit as well

The jumper and WHIM plug into the same spot - so, you can't use it.
Donald, I was able to get the CarPlay working today per your instuctions. Is there a way to by-pass the corded headset? I don't anticipate using it in the future. Also can I bluetooth to the USB port in the dash. I'm halfway there just have too many cords to suit me.

Go to logsdonautio.com - once there. go to the bottom and search for carplay adapter. Press enter.

This is what you need: Harley carplay adapter - $16.97. Plus this into the passenger headset port.

Good luck

OH HELL YEAH!!!! This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. So now, If I want to go completely wireless, WHIM right?

If you go wireless and use the WHIM - you will no longer be able to use that plus. Remember, the WHIM takes the place of the headset plugs. So, once you install the WHIM, the rider and passenger headset plugs no longer work.

If you install the WHIM, you will need a wireless headset - then you are wireless. Remember, you will need a Harley headset to be in stereo. Problem is, Harley (Sena) is no longer making them, and they are also doing away with the WHIM.

What is your goal?

Okay you cleared something up. WHIM takes place of the plug. My goal would be to eliminate the cord between my cell phone and the USB Port. Do I have any options?

Yes you do. Go to Amazon, look for the wireless carplay adapter. Make sure you get carplay, not android auto.

Put this adapter in your cubby and plug it into the USB post. Remember you will have to plug that dummy headset plug in - the one that was $16.97.

In just a few moments, carplay will come up on your screen. You can put your phone in your pocket, tour pack or wherever.

First thing to do is ditch the half-helmet. If you're in a bad enough accident to rely on your helmet, you'll also want to have a face when you are done. Personal experience on this.
