Rear brakes on Harley 2014 Trike

I had my 5,000 mile service done today on my 2014 triglide and told the dealer that I started hearing a faint noise when I applied the brakes. He called during the service and told me a rock or something got in between the rear rotor and the brake pad causing a groove to be cut in the rotor. He said not covered by warranty and would cost 94.00 for pads, 198.99 for rotor and maybe 1/2 hour of work. I declined at the present time and when I picked up my bike there was a "Dangerous condition exist" stamped on my invoice. Is this normal?

Its possible for a rock to groove the rotor, I'd look at the other side and see if it has any grooves in it. The dangerous condition exist tag is a little dramatic, the clowns at the dealer are trying to scare you out of your hard earned dollars. A little groove in the rotor and break pad does not equal a dangerous condition. IMO I would have confronted them about it, more I think about it the more it pisses me off.

If they flagged your Trike as operating with a "dangerous condition" that you didn't want them to repair you might be liable for any brake system failure. CYA !
The only way that could be termed dangerous is if the grove cut the rotor to less thickness than the minimum allowable .
If you have the time, take it back & make them prove it is dangerous. If not,,, issue a retraction to their repair order. Then keep it handy for further reference.
If you are in the right there are lots of ways to do battle if they don't want to correct their screw-up. It isn't right to do people that way ! BAD business !!:NoJoke:

sounds like the 09-10 model issues all over again..Mine were grooved up at 2000 miles and pads were trashed by 4 000 miles..

I even had chunks of the brake pads missing and it wasn't from rocks..

I ran into a similar situation. In San Francisco this last trip I had to have left caliper replaced, along with both rotors and pads on a 2011. The problem was the E-brake cable to left side.
I ask them to not hook-up E-brake again, remove it all if they wanted to. No way. I had to sign several orders that highlighted that E-brake was faulty. Then got the sermon about pulling trailer may have been the cause. I just signed and went on my way. (they left E-brake adjustment loose) and I removed complete unit when I returned home.
This was only the third time the trike had been in a dealership. It is out of warranty a few years now. I am sure what I signed voided any liability from them for everything that may happen.
They were just covering their butts like your dealer. I was just glad to get repair and get back to riding, maybe they did not have time to put a tag on it.
In your case, worth a few more trips and talking about. (show me the stone type stuff) Never hurts as long as it stays civil.

If it were truly dangerous conditions, the trike should have never been reassembled and returned to the owner!:Joker3::Joker3:

Yea, Right! You take your Trike in for a repair and they tell you there's a dangerous condition, And they won't return the Trike to you unless they fix it...

Can you say WW 3.......

I had a small shop 35+ years [not bikes] And when I thought the repair was needed and the customer declined, They would sign off on it.. And go their merry way.. So no lawyers would be knocking on my door later...

This really pisses me of to hear things like this,

Why not have a place here for people to give the name and location of rip-off dealers like the one above where people can be warned and stay the hell away ?

Seems the HD dealership's have a right to advertise all over the internet and every where else about how wonderful their dealership is and how great their service is.

Is their some kind of law that they can hide behind, and are untouchable?

Is their something I don't know ?...or am I the only one that does not understand....BS

"A rock or something"? did they show you the rock (or something)? Sounds like BS and dealer trying to scare you into spending $ fixing it. Think you should mention the dealer. I hate scare tactics...

I guess like everything else, laws can be far different from state to state, where I owned my shops in Missouri, if I let the owner drive away in a vehicle that I deemed unsafe/dangerous condition and it was involved in an accident, I would be sued & possibly arrested.
The good things is, martyjk didn't have that happen and only has to deal with stupid comments on an invoice. With any luck the dealer will correct the situation or martyjk can find a dealer to trust.

Can't believe the cost of rotors for these trikes. You can install 4 own a car for that price. Just saying
