I have a 2011 triglide, aprox. 9000 miles.Last Sat. afternoon the rear belt broke.I call some friends, get it loaded & bring it home.Monday morning take it to the dealer i do buisness with. They state they'll try to have done by fri.I got a call yesterday afternoon, they have it finished. While it was there i had them check a clutch problem that i had since new. They warrantied everthing but told me the problem with clutch was do to the redline i had in the primary. They stated the clutch discs were dry. They soaked them in h-d + for a couple hrs then put it all back together. At the moment everthing is good, slight squeak noise on the lower left side, but much better shifting & taking off.I have know idea why the redline did not soak into the clutch disc,as i have used it for yrs. with no problems. My two thoughts are why didn't they catch this in the 1000,5000,& 10,000 mile service?,& can these disc be damaged from running dry?Any thoughts? Thanks

Maybe the tech doesn't like RedLine. :)

Did he come right out and say RedLine caused the problem or did he say whatever oil you used caused the problem, not knowing what oil you used??

no,i told him what was in there when i dropped it off.I also told him i bought the redline at another h-d dealer. He also stated that he doesn't use any of the h-d fluilds in his bike either. They were all at a loss for the disc being dry.

Did they hapen to state why the belt broke at 9000 miles? Some HD dalers is this area don't stock the belt as they state one rarely breaks or wears out !

I would find out if they know why the belt broke also. I would think it strange for the belt to break at 9000 miles unless it was faulty, abused or improperly installed.

which red line product did you use in the primary? did you call red line about the problem?
maybe the dealer considers the red line fluid too thick fot the primary.in the manual the main cause of the belt breaking would be getting amall rock , debree between the belt and the rear pulley. etc. been going over some gravel roads lately?

I'm pretty sure the primary case takes about 38 ounces of oil for an oil change so you need to put a quart plus six ounces in there. Maybe you only got a quart in it during your last oil change and it wasn't lubricating the clutch properly.

I ordered Redline for my next oil change and it's due to arrive today. Will be my first experience with it. Got enough for all three holes and extra for the primary. Now I'm wondering if my transmission requires a little more than stock due to the addition of the Champion Reverse. Had to add a few ounces of oil to the tranny the last time I checked it but can't find any signs of a leak. I only ordered a quart of shockproof so I hope it's enough!!

They had no idea why the belt broke, just defective was there guess. No rocks,no chips in gear & no abuse.eagle1 the redline primary oil,is all i can tell you,i don't have any of it left to see what it says on the label.I have not contacted redline,i don't believe that was the problem. What i've been wondering is,My trike was built in dec.of 2010,& i purchased it in late aug.of 2011 new.Could the clutch plates dried out over time? I've had the clutch problem since new.Greydog, they checked the fluid level before they tore it down & said that it was full.

Once again, I am baffled by the differences of opinion at the different dealerships. The techs at my dealer all recommend Redline in the tranny and most all of them use it in their own bikes. Dunno why the techs at another dealer would not be happy with the pink stuff. Since I had them put it in my "11 at the 5,000 mile change, my tranny shifts smooth and sweet with zero issues.

Oh,, and YES...you do need a little more than a quart in the tranny. I take 'em in 2 quarts when I get a service so they will have enough. Get the 15,000 service done next week and will be puttin' in the Redline as always.

i,ve used red line shockproof gear lube (1 qt) in the tranny. & syn 3 in the primary. 23k on my '09 t/g, just as info. and r/l 20x60 syn oil in the engine. i have the baker plus 1 oil pan, engine oil takes 4 1/2 qt w/ oil filter change. and the drive belt rubs the oil pan slightly. rubed hard before the dealer adjusted the belt.

Ive run redline in my primary & tranny on 3 of the 4 h-ds i've had without a problem.I think the trike just sat to long.Maybe the dealer i bought it from should of resoaked the disc before i took delivery.Just my thoughts.I've put a couple hundred miles on it since i picked it up thur. & all seems good.jim&mona,i don't do any fast take offs or hard shifts,I think like the h-d dealer that it was just a defective belt.I haven't had time to get back to the dealer that i bought the redline from, but it will be interesting to see what their thoughts are.

I run Redline shock proof in the trans and a QT does the trick every time in 07 and later 6 speeds, pre 07 5 speeds take 24 - 26 oz's. I run Formula+ in the primary, there has been a rash of failed compensator's which some folks have tracked down to 1 poor design and the other being lubes other than Formula+ being used. If you start getting a lot of rattling, new vibration or a pretty good bang, your compensator is checking out.

My brain is not working, whats the compensator

It keeps driveline shock from being absorbed by the crank shaft which could cause the splines on the crank to twist or worse cause the crank it self to shift. In this picture you can see the sprocket, the ramps and the spring plates located behind the ramps of the compensator.

83935-09A for the compensator assembly and 83936-09 for the spring pack, their pricey. Comp assembly is $197 @ about 20% off and the spring pack is about $80 @ 20% off.

Been a little slow getting on the forums since I'm on a trip to the NE states, been riding and site seeing.

Thanks Mike I also am out riding. In Sturgis SD heading to Glacier National Park then back to Key Largo. I plan on doing the change when I get back.

If your looking to upgrade your compensator to the SE style one you also need the rotor for the stator, you may be better off buying the SE compensator kit which comes with everything you need PN 40274-08A list for $249.95.
