My friends, I got my bike back from the shop and it has a heck of a racket in the primary in what sounds like the clutch assembly.
Damn nasty racket when it's in neutral or the clutch is disengaged.
It seems (at times) like it's getting less noisy as miles are put on it. I have about 75 miles on the new engine.
I have all new clutch plates and spacers in it.
The mechanic that was changing out my engine had a different clutch hub assembly (used) that we put in.
The noise pretty much goes away when it starts rolling under power. but its still there, I believe the compensator was changed also.
I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this being a break in issue, even though a new clutch can make some noise?

I really cant afford to replace with new( damn I hate this shit), but what might your thoughts be on what's causing the racket? If I have to I will take the primary back down myself.

OUCH!! 75 miles on a rebuild and it is making a noise??? I'd be back at the mechanics front door with blood in my eye. Used clutch basket or not, there should be some kind of guarantee on a rebuild

Good Luck!

Thanks:

I'm not worried about him standing behind it, Im just looking for thoughts on the mechanical issue.

somethings loose...pull off the primary cover, check the oil for metal when you drain it out, check the torque on the tranny and the main shaft, tightness of the chain. you'll find it there somewhere i'm sure. good luck

Thanks: I am beginning to think along those lines.
My head is a dangerous neighborhood and I hate to go in there myself?:D
It never hurts too check ones thinking huh?

I have had problems on two other six speed twin cam models both times it was the inner primary brg. noise would decrease some when clutch was pulled in.i have seen many others with the same issue.was this brg changed during the rebuild?

man it could be bearings,chain tension,clutch rattle,compensator..

I think your best bet is take it back and let them tell you what is wrong..

Yep, I just like to speak from an educated point of view, When I suggest possibilities, I have had primary's down before but one forgets the particulars over time.
You guys are helping it all come back to me.

Good luck..

It maybe just simple like a chain tension..Lets hope that's all that is??

I got my fingers crossed. The particulars of the drive components are coming back to me, any thing else you can think of is grist to the mill and appreciated.ThumbUp
I just want to get it right so I can get on with my bucket list.

Well just finished putting all my primary back together..Compensator,stator/rotor,clutch,bearings,primary chain,tensioner..

That's pretty much what is in the primary..

Lets all hope its something simple..

My mechanics helper just called me and told the mech. will be bringing my scooter back to me at lunch and says I will be very pleased with it.
He took it down and compared the two compensators side by side and my old one was a 1/16" difference in length, I had wondered about the variable thickness washer behind it being wrong and causing alignment problems and that was one of the points made by you folks also.
I haven't talked to the mechanic yet but I'm guessing that was what it was?

Thanks everybody.ThumbUp

Sweet, I just love it when its a relatively simply fix.

me too! I just put 60 miles on it and it feels and runs good. I a Happy boy!:D

Take care of yourself do what the old fart tells you and you may just get to start on that list . Rush things as I do and you can go a couple months hacking around .
