oil temperature gage

I would like to swap out my air temp gage and install a HD oil temp gage. has anyone made this swap and out difficult was it to hook up? thanx for any response.

I have done a couple of them. Very easy. Outer fairing must be removed to change gauges. Oil pan front plug needs to removed to screw in sending unit. Very simple.

They made an oil cap that had an oil temp built in

seen the oil cap but not finding that air gage too meaningful, I thought the gage in the fairing would be a good idea if I could hook it up fairly easy. thanks everyone for the time.

Yea I never have figured out why the Motor Company puts the air temp gauge instead of an oil temp gauge there. Your out in the weather and know its either cold hot or very hot or even if its hotter than hades. Probably just to make money selling the oil gauges.

I took off my outer fairing on my 09 TG . to change out the speakers. Was going to change out the air temp for oil temp. But was not in the mood. Looked like the nuts that hold the gauge in place were hard to get to. I read some were else. That some TG owners were taking out the radio to get to the screws that hold the gauge in. I also did not like the idea of having to cut and splice a wire that goes to the oil temp gauge. It's not a plug and play.

Yes, definitely a plus to remove the radio - much easier install. Get yourself a long ball-tip allen wrench for that. Don't remember splicing any wires though.

:Agree:, One of the 1st things I do on any HD bagger I own is ditch the air temp gauge in favor of a oil temp gauge. There was a couple connectors to crimp on once you cut off the plug with the orange and black wire on it, pretty simple job if your mechanically inclined.

When i installed the oil temp gage i only removed a support bracket that was close to the gage , dont remember exactly but i think it was called left inner faring support, with it out of the way the back of the gage was easy to get at. And yes, you cut the orange and black wires and crimp new ends on.

Besides being not so accurate. I know of few riders that wanted to comment on this digital gauge they had added to their rides. Only to find that when they went to point it out. It was just a chrome cap. In other words. The nice thief went and replaced their digital thermometer with the standard stock one from their own bike. Their very very easy to steal!
Besides,... it's safer to read the oil temp in the dash when rolling down the road.

That's probably because new owners would probably have a heart attack when they saw what the oil temperature really is!!! :AGGHH:

I definitely agree with you on that one! Besides, they say they dont have a heat problem. lol

+1, my dad saw oil temps of 300 degrees on several occasions before we made some changes to get it under control. Funny thing is the MoCo said it was normal:blahblah::banghead:.

It was normal for their new motors. It's not good just normal.

I have an oil cooler and my motor has been tuned. My normal oil temp is 190 to 210 depending on the outside temp. I live in south florida.
