oil level on freewheeler or tri glide

my service manual for my 2015 freewheeler says the oil level should be half way on the dipstick when cold. My oil level always stays on the full mark hot or cold unless of course it realy does need oil. I went to the dealer and checked a brand new tri glide on the floor. the oil level was at the full mark and it had been sitting for a few weeks. Is the manual giving the wrong advice? What is the levels on everyone elses trike when cold. I need as many responses as possible cause I dont want to destroy my motor by having the wrong level.

I keep mine 2011 Tri-Glide at a half Qt low... Little more than than half way on the dip stick... 36 Thousand miles.. That way...

''Except'' once when i filled it to the full mark, and then i started to get Blow-Bye though the air cleaner... That makes a mess... I had a Spyder and ran it a half Qt low also and if i ran it full it would also have blow-bye...

I keep mine on the "full on jiffy stand" line, measured when hot. The cold check is all over the dipstick. Not accurate.

the question I am asking is does your oil level drop from the full mark when hot to the midway mark when cold. My freewheeler stays at the full mark when hot and does not go down at all when cold, do your trikes do the same

My Freewheeler does the same thing. When hot the oil level is at the full mark. When checked cold will be down a few dots on the dip stick but still pretty much reads full.

You won't destroy your motor...maybe a pair of pants or two. If oil is over filled, it will tend to cause blowback through the air filter and make a mess on the engine and your leg.

I wouldn't want it to read full cold, I'd want it down from there. I typically add 3.5 qts and that is about perfect to keep from having the above blowback, and it reads full when hot.

Thanks Bill G. I guess you are the only one that understood my question. I know not to overfill. I just wanted to see if they level went down between hot and cold

No problem Brother.

My Freewheeler has done what your saying since it was new. I wondered and watched it because my other Harley's had dropped lower in level on the dip stick when a cold oil check was done.

I have found this not to be the same and to be more what your talking about as the normal on my Freewheeler. When checked cold it's about 1/8" maybe 1/4" or a few dots on the dip stick down from the hot full mark. Then when checked hot it reads pretty much at the hot full mark, not much change.

My Street Glide on the other hand would drop down on a cold oil check to right above the 1/2 mark to around the 3/4 point on the dip stick.

Take Care,
Bill G
