Oil changing

Has any owner/rider/after market come up with a way to remove the oil filter w/o most of the oil trickling down the lower front? That "cheesey" orange device Harley sells is no better than stuffing the area with rags. At least my Wide Glide was mostly out in the open! I miss Eli.

I concur with fuzzy. You really can not prevent the drip out of oil. I just try to minimize the effects by washing it down to clean it. Like fuzzy before, but after the filter is off I use super purple cleaner was it down. I have not seen any device that prevent any oil from dripping out. Most of us just accept it and clean up.

I use rubber gloves to change oil, so when I unscrew the filter I cover it with one of my gloves. Guess I should say I put the filter inside the glove then unscrew it. Just for safety sake I put a rag under it all just in case I spill some oil. Works for me. If I do spill some I use brake cleaner to clean the little spill.

oil change

I go to the pet store and buy a bag of absorbing rags for dogs to pee on. I tuck one of these under the filter it soaks up the spilled oil and leaves no mess

Who would be interested in having a way to relocate the oil filter away from the stock location, in a spot where there was nothing under it, and you could just put a drain pan under it and take it off and let the oil go into the drain pan?

This is something we are looking at doing...been thinking about it off and on for over a decade, and we're going to finally be trying it soon.

You might check out these folks for some ideas http://www.mooresensible.com/, I've seen a lot of positive comments. Every once in awhile I toy with the idea of installing one of these kits, then talk myself out of it, I don't mind the mess that much.

Yes, I've looked at the website a dozen times over the years, but never pulled the trigger either...for the same reason. But now that we're working on an oil cooler for the wetheads, it is making some sense to move the oil filter...killing 2 birds with one stone.

We may work with Moore, or we might come up with a different set-up. We'll know shortly.

when you get something on the board, please let us know. I am tired of cleaning up my garage floor, and the lower front of the bike. Jacking up the right rear and using the orange thingy is just not doing it.

Thanks!

Will do.

Yes it does. :)

We spent 5 hours working on fitment of the oil cooler today. Made some good progress. Probably still have 10-15 more hours of modeling to get it where we want, then who knows how much time in the oil filter relo...then we gotta test it (that means we will try and break it).

So we have a ways to go, but we have moved from wanting to do it, to being closer to a prototype to test. :)

Someone once asked me why it takes so long?

If we were just making one, that is quite a bit easier, but we always have to design something with the following criteria:

1. Functions well
2. Looks good
3. Easy to install
4. Economical to manufacture
5. Never breaks (all parts we make have a Lifetime Warranty, which we can afford to do if we make the product so that it won't break) :)

Oil Filter Change

I drill a hole in bottom and top and let it drain for a half hour before starting to remove. Vast improvement in mess.
