Oil Change

I change my oil on my 2012 Goldwing trike and when I put a full gallon back in it was still 1/2 quart low. Everyone tells me not to screw the dip stick in just put it down on the threads. I first I thought that I didn't give it enough time for the oil to drain back down. The dealership here in Enid told me to drive it a little and then let it set and check it. I did that and it was just touching the dip stick. I let set overnigh and it was still just touching the dip stick, so I added 1/2 quart and that put it up to full. The only thing that I can think of is that the gallon wasn't completely full. Has anyone else had this problem? Next time I may buy oil in quarts instead of the gallon.

I found some of the oil filters take more oil to fill them
# 2 , I have found that the gallon jugs of Rotella are not full to the top.
A quart short is a lot . The bike only needs 3.7 quarts with out the filter. If you were 4oz short and have a large filter it could be shy. I would believe the dip stick. On the 1500 you do not screw it in, not sure if the 1800 is the same.

I bought the oil and filter from the dealer that I bought the trike from. I didn't look to see it the gallon was full or did it check to see if the filter was larger. These could be the reason I had to add 1/2 quart.

The same thing happens to me and I did what you did, only I used quart containers. Sometimes a day later it will show too much oil.

I have rode my trike about 80 miles after I changed the oil and just got done checking and it is still on full, maybe just a little over full. Wonder how many other people have this same thing happen to them. Wonder if it will be the same thing when I change the oil again.

Dip stick?? No such thing on our Yamaha RSV. Put trike on level surface and fill until oil is halfway up sight window. Usually less than a gallon with filter.

Another possibility..... If the front of your trike is setting slightly lower then the rear like many trikes do then some of the oil will be in the front of the engine so it will not show on the dip stick. Don't know how that will effect things. You might ask the Honda mechanic that question...
