Not triked yet.

Hello from Neenah, Wisconsin. Currently I don't have a trike but with age and old injuries getting up there I am giving it much consideration. My '86 Gold Wing is too old and I have a buyer in the spring I also have a 1300 VTX but think I may wish to leave that as is. Or get a large scooter for the city riding. I wouldn't trike a Wing because there's to much in the way to stretch out the legs.
I came here to try and learn some before I make a decision. The same as I've join a scooter site to learn if I want on of those. I'm retired now so I have time but not much money.
Just hoping this board is as nice as recommended and so far appears. I'm ready for some fun conversations as well.

welcome aboard. There are a lot of variables in a trike selection. If you spent any time on an ATV or a snowmobile then you have a leg up on how a trike handles. As far as choice take the time and read all the different forums. there are a lot of different opinions but the bottom line is what you are going to be happy with. Start you research and ask questions.
 
I wouldn't trike a Wing because there's to much in the way to stretch out the legs..
If you add a conversion to a Wing with foot fairings that are weight bearing, you can remove the rider pegs and have lots of room to move your feet around
This also lowers you feet allowing your knees not to be bent so much
 
HD triglide crash bar allows you to install highway pegs to sute your required leg stretch. Also with all the options of pegs, large to skinney sticks, picking your needs is pretty easy as is location. JMO. :Coffee:
 
Thanks guys. I do have some experience. A Harley ex-police trike and Triumph with side hack in the '70s. Owned a house for 17 years across the street from the snowmobile trail and 5 years in a cottage in northern Wisconsin with an ATV trail on the property.
One option I've seen are called TrailerTrikes. They attach to the frame under the engine and the frame work goes around the rear wheel with an other wheel on each side. About the same price as a side hack.
 
This is a great site without most of the BS that seems to crop up on some sites.

Trike conversions are expensive.

IMO do your research, go test drive some different brands and different conversions and narrow it down to a couple of options.

Then start looking for a deal.

The guy that originally had my trike built spent over $40K for the bike, motor upgrades and conversion. I bought it with less than 2K miles on the conversion and paid $20K for it. I have spent about $3K modifying it to my taste.

There are deals out there, if your willing to look and be patient

BTW...my opinion and $5 will get you a large coffee at Starbucks
 
You can definitely buy one already converted cheaper than you can buy a bike and convert it. Plus you get to test ride it and know if you like it. Good luck with your search! And welcome from KY.
 
Welcome to TT from WV. Lots of knowledgeable folks here. As previously stated, do the research and ride as many different configurations as you can. Good luck on your search.
 
When doing research seek out independent installers who have worked on different conversations. They will have a lot of valuable unbiased information. The amount of farkles defiantly raise the cost as with any vehicle. The shop that did mine works on different brands and is well qualified. I ride with a social organization with a large amount of trikes and the shop came highly recommended.

Well here's a tip for your education purposes.

At the top of the forums page on the right side is an advanced search feature. Type a simple questions into it and you will be able to access everything ever written on the subject.

I personally would stay away from the outrigger type trikes just because I did see draw backs to them I.E. handling and rear tire longevity, getting stuck with your drive wheel suspended above the outrigger wheels, tire pressures etc. although there will be some on the site that will tell you they like them? Investigate it thoroughly using the search feature.
There is also the ever present question of rake kit V/S no rake kit etc.

If you go for a kit your best bet is to purchase a complete kit instead of building it piece meal, there will be allot of hidden obstacles to your completion and the cost will likely exceed the complete kit price.
