NJ ELECTRIC VEHICLE FEE

I've heard alot of states are looking at this.Part of the gas tax goes to road repair. If you ain't buying gas they get no tax so they add it to the registration so you have to pay it.

You just can't win with the system when it comes to the government getting its fair share.

There may be some folks that bought EVs that end up with "buyers remorse" because I'm guessing all State will end up collecting a fair share from them.

If a NJ resident drives around 12,000 miles in a gasser that gets around 30mpg then they will pay about $180.00 per year in State/Federal gas taxes.

If I was a taxpayer and owner of an EV in New Jersey (which I am not) I would not be happy about paying above what the average gas vehicle owner is paying to use the roads. Now you could make the argument "well, since I am not buying $1,000 to $1,200 worth of gas I am still ahead of the game". I would argue that you aren't saving that much because you have to deduct the electricity it takes to recharge your EV all year, which is estimated at around $500 to $700 for 12,000 miles driven per year.

I suspect that as time goes on the Feds will come up with some type of annual "road use tax" on EV owners also. The federal government depends of gas/fuel taxes to build and maintain roads.

I can't believe Kalifornia wasn't the first state to start this kind of charge, but then, I'll never have to worry about paying a EV fee

Was just down in VA and they already are being taxed on EV's. I have family there who owns a hybrid and get they get taxed as well.

Sitting here tonight, waiting for this next hurricane to arrive and the power outage that is sure to come with it. I have my trusty 9000 watt generator all ready to go which will power 80% of our home. I wonder though what if my family vehicle was an EV? Would I have to turn the a/c off for the house in order to partially charge it? It would definitely create an issue for me if on extended generator for several days. As it is, I just made sure the KIA was fully gassed up so I can drive over 400 miles before needing gas.
