New member needs opinions

Hi everyone. Just found this site and it is just what I need. I currently have an '06 GOLDWING and this coming fall would like to trike it. I need opinions on what is the best kit to go with. I would like to do the work myself (I am extremely competent having done all the maintenance on my bike and have built several hot rods from the ground up).

There are many, MANY different opinions on "the best". You'll receive a lot of different answers.<br />

The best advice I can give is to do your research, find a REPUTABLE installer, and ride as many different brands that you can. Then choose what's right for YOUR style of riding and what YOU feel comfortable with.<br />

<font size="3">Good luck with doing the conversion yourself. RoadSmith offers good instructions on DIY project. Do yourself a favor, talk to others that have done the conversion, this in my opinion, is not for someone without some really good skill levels relating to the project. </font>

The best advice I can offer is for you to come to our annual TRIKE convention in Eurecka Springs Ak June 17-19. There will be upwards of 150 trikes of every make model and description. You can get great information from owners to builders.

I just had a champion kit installed on my harley and am very happy with it. My installer commented that the instructions were right on the mark and the kit went on very nicely. Also have four of my club members on GW with champion kits and no complaints. My best advice is to check out and compare on the company web sites and narrow your preference down then check them out in person at local installers.

Check out DFT trike kit. I love the DFT kit but there s no option for an aux fuel tank.

1st check with your insurance to see if they will insure a self installed trike or at least talk to other DIY'ers to see how they insured their Trikes.

Make a list of DIY conversions. Then look at the conversions see what you like best. Then ask us questions about the results. I have a Harley/Champion, but I like the Roadsmith on the GW.

A lot of the kit companies will not sell to a private owner, so you will need to find a kit with the options you like that you are actually able to purchase. If you can diy you will save yourself quite a bit of cash but will your insurance company cover it once you are done? Then after the build, what kind of warranty do you have? Check into it, might not be worth the trouble. I know with you having the skills to do it is tempting, but in the long run maybe not.

I too am very happy with my DFT conversion (on a '97 HD Electraglide). The instructions are a little vague, but the quality and ride are excellent. I recently had the opportunity to put a few miles on a 2010 Triglide and found the ride to be a bit harsh compared to the DFT. Could have been something in the setup on the Triglide, but my wife clearly preferred our DFT (saving me $35,000).

Are you SURE you want to install it yourself? Lot of work to save 1200-1400 hundred bucks. Plus, the liability of it with a potential insurer. Like was stated earlier, many companies will not LET you install their kits. Too many legal problems. Besides, a good installer can have your trike back in a week.. Do you have the time to devote that much concentrated effort to that project? Just asking.

I am most pleased with my CSC Viper... There are several great kits out there, as already stated some will not sell to individuals like CSC, Hannigan and more. I know that Champion does and they now offer IRS suspension which is a big plus in my opinion.

Someone said to go to the Rally and I believe that would be very informative and educational for you. I would do a lot of research, I went through three Trikes before I was satisfied and believe me that is expensive and stressful; all in less that 12 months.

I think building yourself is a great idea if you are competent and it sounds like you are. You will know a lot more about your trike and be a lot more connected. I always enjoy doing my own maintenance and you know it's done right.

You won't find many people say "well yeah I spent $30,000 and my trike is a piece of @#$%." We all like our own trikes for our own reasons. I like my RS because of the IRS, AUX tank, larger lower trunk and a longer wheelbase. Everyone likes their own trikes so do your home work and enjoy the ride.
As far as DIY goes check with your insurance co. I have Dairyland and know that lots on the site have it as well. Then again just shop around, there is a thread on the forum about insurance too.
Last but not least whatever you do enjoy the ride and be safe not all cage drivers see trikes either.

If you look at Patriot's DFT and my DFT there different...Mine's on a Valkryie and has over 9 cu. ft. of storage. The DFT also has no maintenance except for 8 zerk fitting you grease a year. We've put over 85,000 miles on her and no problems, just make sure when your done to have your tire shop road force the rear wheel and balanceor it fibrates......enjoy............DFT = Darn Fine Trike
