Hello all, Roger Hays here from Western New York. Have been retired for 3 years. I spent all my life wrenching on, drag racing, and restoring automobiles, and I am burned out and looking for a change in my life. A friend at the local Harley dealer (service manager)said I should look into getting a trike. I have never been on a street bike on my own, but I have spent a lot of time on an off-road bike.

From an outside point of view, what do you think of the idea? My wife is kind of okay with it as long as I sell something to purchase it. It just seems like a lot of money to spend on something I have never done. There are a lot of country roads around here to get the road time, and I live on a major road, so I see a lot of groups of bikes passing by during the summer, and it looks like fun.
Does this seem like a doable change, or should I take up baking?

Too big of a step at this point in my life (66)? I know only I can make the final decision, just looking for input.
Thanks for your input, and no, this is not a joke.

Welcome to Trike Talk, glad you joined us. I say go for it! I started riding trikes about eight years ago and I love it. I used to be into building and showing truck and cars and it just got to be boring to me. I started out with an older trike to make sure we would like riding and once the wife got go the trike and she liked it, it was all over. We ride all over the country and love it. Like I said "GO FOR IT" you will like it.

Welcome to TT!ThumbUp

Only one that can really answer that question is you. I'm betting you already know the answer and just want to blame us for getting a trike!:D

I would tell you to go for it myself.

You're only 66? Barring critical health issues, you and your wife have a lot of good touring years ahead of you. I'm a relatively young 70 and by far not one of the elder trikers in this group.

Several years ago I met a couple from Alabama on the Blue Ridge Parkway. They were riding their trike to Washington D.C. Talked to them for a while and found out they were in their late 80's Oldest triker I've talked to so far was 92, slowing down, but still riding.

I started out with an inexpensive older trike for around town and to get used to the feel of it. Sold it a year later and bought a real touring trike. I'm on my third trike now and think nothing of packing up for a week on the road and logging 1500 or 2000 miles before getting home again.

First welcome aboard. Second suggestion is if your dealer will rent you a trike for a few days to see if it's for you. You state that you see the bikes go by and you get the urge. I think you might be hooked. Get out there and see. I take 2 or 3 long rides a year and me and the wife have a great time. She rides her own trike also. Good luck.

Go for it. If for some reason it turns out to not be "your cup of tea" you could always sell at little or no loss. Trikes in good condition usually hold their value well...

Best wishes. Let us know how you're doing. Have fun, post often, be safe!

It just seems like alot of money to spend on something I have never done.
You weren't born restoring cars were you? You had to start somewhere. It wasn't free was it? It was a lot of money to do that wasn't it.
So that ain't much of an excuse.

I'd say go for it, I got you beat age wise by 12 yrs.
:D

I started riding again 4 years ago at age 64, I ride a 2011 Trip Glide Ultra Classic. My wife and I put 101,595 miles on it so for and don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Welcome to Trike Talk! :wave4:

I'll echo what others have said: I think you've got the urge, and if you follow through I would bet you'll love it!

Thanks for the replies. It looks to be unanimous. I guess a trike is in my future. All make grear arguments the next biggest proble is where I live the dealers have none to rent as far as I have found out so it will be a get it and see. but as was pointed out the resale value on them seems to be high if it doesn,t work out. Biggest problem will be selling one of my cars to finance this endeavor.

Thanks again.
Anyone want to buy a car? j/k
