I bought my first Harley yesterday and have a couple of questions to ask. Does the bike only start in neutral and why is it so hard to find neutral? Another question does the gear selector only show when the clutch is engaged? (released)

1] It will start in gear also if you firmly step on the foot brake...

2] Finding neutral is an finesse thing , I just lightly tap the heal shifter into Neutral...

3] Yes only when the clutch is engaged.....

As the bike gets more miles on it finding neutral will become a lot easier, and yes it will start in gear although I try to avoid starting mine in gear, and on my 17 you must have the clutch engaged for the gear selector to work. And congrats on the new trike.

I have been able to toe up into neutral a little easier after about 7k miles. But there are lots of times I still reach down and find neutral by hand. Also like you heard before, a tap at the heel shifter works good too. I do that when I don't feel like reaching down to do it by hand.

I put an extended heel shifter on my TGU and it has increased my percentage of finding neutral. I use neutral at each stop light to rest my left hand.

As others have stated, clutch must be engaged to display gear.

Ray, to add a little humor to your thread... someone needs to help you turn the Avatar pic of your beautiful new red Tri-Glide over onto its wheels. Neutral might be easier to find when its upright!

Congrats on your new ride!!!
