New guy has questions about aftermarket mufflers

I bought my first trike, a used 2010 TriGlide. The previous owner put on Rinehart exhaust (a bit too loud for my liking but they will stay for now). I think just the slipon - not the whole system. Is there a way to tell if the fuel injection system was re calibrated? Also is it necessary to put in a different air cleaner like a SE stage 1 or similar aftermarket, when aftermarket pipes are put on? I am thrilled to have found this site. I appreciate all the good advice from reading old posts and threads about all the unique aspects of owning and riding a trike.

Welcome Badfoot and greetings from Long Island.
You can always take a look at the plugs. Either a good tan color or not.

It's not necessary to recalibrate with just slip ons, and if that's all that was done, he probably didn't. If, however, the catalytic converter has been removed, it needs to be recalibrated. My preference is the TTS Mastertune. Also, not necessary for a new air box.

Welcome aboard. If it was tuned by HD with a HD tuner then they should of given you the orange box that was used to program it. If it was an aftermarket tuner that goes in line with the ECM it should be attached to the ECM area via a cable. You could try and contact the previous owner through the dealer if possible. You can see if you can get a smaller diameter baffle for the mufflers that will help quite it down a bit. More than likely they have 2 in baffles and you could replace them with 1.75 inch baffles. Harleys run lean from the factory. A lot of the experts say that if you replace just the mufflers or just the air cleaner then the ECM will compensate for the one mod. Replace both or anything more they say reprogram. As far as do you need the air cleaner when you change pipes the answer is yes and no. If you are looking for a performance change and you ride it a little hard then yes. If you are just looking for a noise change and do not ride it hard then just changing muffler the ECM will probably take care of it. Good luck and welcome aboard again.

If you can't find any evidence of a tuner you could have the dealer hook up with the digital technician, the digital tech will read the ecm and report if it has been altered with a flash tuner. Sometime folks will use a flash tuner such as the TTS or power vision and not include it when they trade or sell the bike or trike. IMO if its been flashed with a flash tuner it should be included, when I get rid of a bike I always include the tuner, to me it is part of the bike once married.

As to the air cleaner, it all depends on what rpm range you ride. If you keeping to the 4,000 and below, I wouldn't bother with the air cleaner. If you one who likes to wind it out, the air cleaner will add a touch more in the high rpm areas. The biggest bang for you buck is a good exhaust and a good tune, a good tune really wakes it up.

I should have checked Rinehart website first about recalibration.
