My first thread...does this look normal? 2015 TG

Ok so I bought a 2015 TG with less than 3K on the clock. I was detailing it and pulled the side covers off. I noticed some marks on the drive belt. It appears that it is maybe scraping somewhere but I can't see where. Is this normal? I am new to trikes. I appreciate the help.

Yep, I would be getting that checked instead of the belt breaking and causing more damage. Jim

As others have said. Not normal, and not good. Those belts are strong, but I'd seriously consider getting that one replaced...AFTER whatever is causing it is resolved.

First of all I can from experience tell you that belts ARE NOT a warrantee item!! And I can also probably tell you what caused that to your belt. I experienced the same issue only my wear was about 1/2 inch from the side and wore down to the cords, same as yours. What happened to mine (and to my riding buddy who has a 2013 TriGlide as well) was a rock got lodged between the housing (at the V-shaped bottom) and the belt rode on it until it kicked it out. When we changed the belt (around $900 project for the shop to perform) we found the rock on top of the frame. The body had to be removed for belt replacement.

The dealer (personal friends) felt so bad about it not being covered under warrantee that they said sometimes the customer can do better with the MOCO directly so they gave me the phone number and name of the person. I called and argued for better than 1/2 hour and got no where!!!!

Actually, after removing the belt, even though the 1/4 inch groove was down to the cords, I do not believe it had lost any strength because it did not damage any of the cords. I just felt better replacing it, and I do not travel on any gravel roads for this reason. I wish there was a guard in this area to prevent this sort of thing. As previously stated, I am aware of two separate incidents where this happened.

Geezer hit the nail on the head. Something got wedged and rubbed on the belt. Look the belt over closely and if there is not any cord damage I would not worry about it. Those belts are tough. Your choice as to what to do. After all you are the one riding it.

$900 bucks is a lot to come up with on a bike I just bought. Anyone know how much the belt is and the difficulty level of replacing it at home? I don't have a manual yet.

Just had belt replaced on 05 Ultra Classic. Sounds about right! Belt cost was 149. Labor 8 hours.

I'm kinda leaning towards Gorilla's thoughts on the belt. They are super strong and IF the damage is cosmetic and didnt damage the cords, you could probably get many thousands of miles out of it. Would have to see it up close to determine..your dealer will surely want to replace it and yes, its a PITA. Doable if you're a decent wrench, requires a special tool (pulley lock) but you can make one out of a 7" piece of 3/4" or 1 "angle iron. If you decide to so it PM me and I will send you some how to links.

Reporting back on this thread. The shop told me that I have teeth missing from the reverse ring gear. It appears that something got lodge under the bike by the previous owner(s). They quoted me $1500 to fix it. They told me 10 hours plus parts. I am a little hesitant because I didn't get the sense that they had a lot of experience with trikes. I don't want to pay for someone's education..I'm already paying for my own. Now I know where to check on a trike when you buy a used one. Even if it has less that 3000 miles on it.

Find an independent shop and get a shop manual for them if need be, it can't be that hard. :AGGHH: fearless

As previously stated in my previous comments, my replacement was close to $1,000 (don't recall exact amount) and my personal Tech friend at the local Harley shape did the work (removed/replaced the body) and it took him less than 8h hrs (thinking it was (6 to 8 hrs). However he had accomplished same task on my riding buddies Trike a couple weeks prior to doing mine - I.e.he had previous experience and knew what he was doing!! My advise, find another shop and ask if they had ever done this job before. I was not happy about paying what it cost me, and I surely would not have been very happy if they would have quoted me $1,500!!

If you just bought from the dealer then they didn't check the bike before they sold it to you..:gah:

I would let someone over there know about you concerns and see if you can at least get the bill knocked down to repair.

Speak to a manger or owner..

Rather than repairing the elec. reverse, go the extra mile and install a macanical reverse , then your done with it.

I agree 100%. For that kind of money you could have a mechanical reverse installed and have a better system

I had the mechanical put in my 11 Tri-Glide, I would recommend it 100%.
Like i said in other posts about reverse' I never have to pass up a parking space, I can park and back out from any spot , Just like a car... The one thing to make sure that whoever installs it '' Make sure they also put in the reverse lock-out wiring harness that comes with the reverse kit..It's a must.. There have been a few that haven't ...[In my opinion it's because they don't know how to do wiring]
