While looking for something else, I came across the following...

In approx Mar of 2013, at a Billy Joel concert at Vanderbilt University, there was a Q & A session where a student asks Billy if he can accompany him on the piano. What follows, is amazing.

Keep in mind they don't know each other, never met before and never rehearsed. It is amazing how two musicians can "read" each other with only a few words exchanged before starting.

Hope you enjoy it. ThumbUp

I have seen this vid before. I have played keyboards since I was 4 yrs old. Had my first band at 12 in the 7th grade. My last band broke up here in Boise about 5 yrs ago. After 43 years, I had enough of the crazy music biz and all the dysfunction that comes with it. Did not have the energy, the time, or the right attitude to start another one.
Back in the early 80's, I played in piano bars around the Salt Lake City area. I was playing at the Room At The Top at the Hilton one Friday night. Billy Joel was playing the next night at the Salt Palace. I did not buy tickets as I had to work, needed the money bad, and could not afford to take the night off. About 10 pm, I had my usual crowd at the bar around the piano singing along with me as always and taking requests. From where the piano was, I had a full view of the entrance. I looked up while playing some song, and in walked Billy Joel and Liberty DeVito, his drummer. They walked to the back of the room and sat down at one of the dark tables, backs against the wall. Nobody even noticed them back there in the dark drinking their beers. I kept playing, and even played Piano Man, which was always a crowd favorite. After about 30 minutes, they stood up, threw some cash on the table and started to leave. When they got to the door, Billy turned and smiled at me, nodded his head, I nodded back, and he was gone.

When I took a break, I asked the waitress if she knew who those two guys that were back there were, which she didn't, and when I told her, she said she had heard of Billy Joel, but didn't really know who he was.
I have played all of his hit tunes, including New York State Of Mind, and some that were not hits, in my career, but that was one of the ones I could not sing, as my voice was not as high as his. I just did several of his tunes as instrumentals. Great memories of an American Icon. He was always one of my idols and have seen him a dozen times over the years. Between him and the keyboard player for Pablo Cruise, they majorly influenced my rockin' piano playin' style. The End. :)

Maybe a little HIJACKING HERE, but great story. Thanks for sharing

Apologies for the hi-jack... Billy Joel is The Man.. And that kid is a great player also, no doubt about that.

Billy is also a rider. Great musician and singer. Glad he gave the kid a shot. Interesting to hear your take on the music biz as well. Not everyone who tries makes it big, Nobody makes it "overnight"

Myself, I do good to play the radio but I love good music of all types
