Hi Team
I am sure someone else has posted this, but not easily finding it. I think I have a bearing going out on my rear right MT conversion. The bike is a 1998 valkyrie. When I turn left you can hear the hum inside the wheel. Does my diagnosis sound about right? Is this something I can replace or repack? Finding it harder and harder to find anyone to work on the older bikes in Hebron, KY. Thanks for any help.

Although not the same, I had a bearing go out on the right rear of my last CSC Viper a couple years back. I wasn't getting any strange movement out of it when grabbing the wheel to check side to side. Or any noticeable crunching out of it. But it definitely sounded made some unusual noise when spun compared to the left rear one. The symptoms I got was some shaking while riding down the Interstate. Not violent but enough to make me concerned and that's when I checked both left and right by spinning.

I ended up replacing both sides just as a precaution and the problem went away. I was lucky as the hubs I found out were front hubs for a 97? Chevy Cavalier so not real expensive. And the R&R was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I also added to my tool collection as a result because three of the bolts needed to be torqued to 200ftlbs and my usual torque wrench only went to 150ftlbs. New one does 250 and is a bit longer and sturdier.

Just to add, about 2 years back on my Silverado pickup truck, I was also getting a hum when turning left at speed on sweepers but no other problems. That time I took it to the dealer as it was under extended warranty and they did replace the right front hub. So it sounds like what you are experiencing so I think you're on the right track.

Gorilla,
Do you happen to know if there's a MT manual still floating around. I've seen it on older posts, but the link is dead. Not sure what model I have. Pretty sure they were a one trick pony back in 2003 when this was installed.
I am going to give it a shot repacking and see what it looks like first. I did my campers years ago with a friend. It wasn't bad.
Thanks for responding.

Sorry no help on the manual. Sometimes you just have to dive into the job and hope for the best.

repacking the bearing isn't going to work.it is a solid axle rear. the bearing is supplied oil from the differential. if you think you have a bad bearing the only way to replace it is. remove the wheel and drum. ( its been awhile then remove the diff cover pull the lock off the axle end. then you can pull the axle. after that you will need to pull the seal and bearing. replace bearing and seal then put it all back togather. i had a 99 valkyrie trike with an MT kit for 20 years, had 214,000 miles on it before it got totaled i have the MT service manual on my Pc. i can email it to you if you send me your email. just put in your email that you need the MT service manual. here is my email. honda1284@embarqmail.com
