Has anyone else had problems with the chassis welds breaking lose from the rear end? As I pulled into my driveway last week the spline yoke that connects the transmission to the drive shaft fell out from under the bike, The welds had broken on the right side of the rear end allowing the rear end to shimmy so bad the yoke fell out.

WOW Dave !!! Talk about a mixed bag of luck..... :AGGHH::AGGHH: I can only imagine the result had that come apart at 70 mph!!!! Sorry I don't have answers. I am glad your VTX hung on until it got you home.

Good luck on the fix. :xszpv: :xszpv:

Suggest you contact Motor Trike with this problem, or better yet, you're not so far away you couldn't trailer the trike to Troup and let them take a look. My conversion dropped the drive shaft and I took it there. They replaced not only the drive shaft, but the output shaft from the engine also. No charge. Give them a call first.

I have a Goldwing/Motortrike and couple years ago the bracket where the ladder bars connect to the rearend broke. I called Motortrike and they arranged shipping from ky to texas and replaced the brackets with really beefed up ones with no charge to me for shipping or repair. The warranty was long gone. Nice folks, took great care of my problem. You should definitely give Richard a call.

Motor trike failure

Motor Trike Informed me I would have to pay for shipping of rear end to and from Troup Tx. This plus purchasing a new drive shaft, a new splined yoke and new shocks places this repair outside my reach now. Guess I'll start saving.

I had heard of cases where a heim joint broke or a bar end broke at the weld nut ..... but this is first I've heard of the tabs welded on the axle tubes breaking off?

:Wrong:

VTX1800 Motor Trike Rear End Weld Failures

Hear you've have 3 separate episodes of welds failing on your Trike's rear end? Are you riding motorcross on the thing?

My gut says that the rear end probably needs to be placed in a jig so things are re-welded into the right places and at the right angles. I'd really only trust a MT Authorized Dealer should make those type of repairs.

I'm certain that if actually MT understands the nature of the failures I'm certain they'll do the right thing by you like they did with the other guys. Could be you just haven't precisely and accurately explained your experiences with the failures to MT. Maybe you're not talking to the right folks at MT?

Rear end welds failures essentially make that Trike unfit for use as a motor vehicle. It could kill you and others when it spirals out of control due to broken welds. If those weld problems become general knowledge the VTX based Motor Trikes will take big hit at the point of resale. Can you say "diminished value"!

Dave won't throw MT under the bus...but I will

Heard that 1st, Dave's heim joint broke, was re-welded by the local MT "Authorized Dealer", then 2nd, the rear tabs broke, were re-welded by the same local MT "Authorized Dealer" (who BTW just happened to report the shocks were leaking), and 3rd, those repairs failed again. After the 3 failures, NOW MT has reportedly "prohibited" their local "Authorized Dealer" from AGAIN repairing the Trike.

Guess MT figured out things were going from bad to worse! Unfortunately, they want to buffalo Dave into footing the bill to ship the rear to their factory. Frankly, IMHO MT needs to not only pay for this latest repair, shipping and all, but also reimburse Dave for what he spent having the first two repairs done "poorly".

As it sits, that Motor Trike Conversion is so much junk with a much diminished value. That is an actual loss that Dave could pursue if he wasn't such a nice guy. Wonder what happens when Dave finally runs out of patience.....

Anybody notice that this thread has over 500 views so far......?

Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!

I had a broken heim joint replaced three months ago.

Show us the pictures of the failed areas on the axle! Wondering if whoever fab'd your rearend in the Factory was either drunk or stoned the day they did the work? Reckon they still work there? Be cool to see the actual damage though!

Think MT will figure out how to make things right? That Trike will never be worth anything anymore given the history you've described. I managed to recover some money in a "diminished value" lawsuit from the couple who ran all over my new car. $10000 worth of damage isn't something I wanted to hide from a dealer at trade in, no matter how well it was repaired. If lying about mileage is fraud, not disclosing major issues has to be as well.

Interesting. My yoke came off at 18000 miles on bike and trike, bent the output shave and damaged the frame so badly that it had to be replaced. Guess there is a limit to their generosity.

Drive train died twice in two months

On 8/20/16 I was riding along at 60mph when I heard a loud noise and then lost the drive. No gear worked. I drifted to side of highway and called my Motor Trike/Honda dealer. They said to tow it to them. I have Rescue Plus and was able to tow to dealer. The dealer stated that the work done 7/29 had been wrong and caused loss of drive. They covered cost and offered to pay for towing. Today I had the same issue. Large metallic failure noise and lost drive. I'm upset.

Its a 2012 GL1800 and 2014 conversion that I bought from dealer in 2014. Tomorrow I call dealer pissed. I had to pay for towing home this time. Anyone else lose their drive while riding?

Update

It took 2 months to get the trike back. The issue was with Motor Trike. Their executives were discussing what they would cover in the warranty. Their u-joint broke and damaged the shaft as well as the engine spline. Motor Trike eventually covered $1500 of the $1900 cost. I'm just hoping this isn't an every two year cost. I take it to Blue Ridge Powersports for yearly service maintenance. The conversion was done 2014. By the way Rescue Plus reimbursed me for the tow. They were affected by hurricane Mathew and didn't have access to their subscriber database. Being in the computer business myself, that is poor disaster recovery planning. No offsite backup to access.
