I use Mobil 1 in everything I have but as I mentioned a few weeks back I get an excess amount of valve train noise with the Mobil1 20 W 50 V-Twin. Is this with all synthetic oils or just Mobil 1? I would like to use the Mobil 1, but don't know what to do. Thanks for any input.

It happens with most 20w50 synthetics, I wouldn't worry about it.

Syn Oil

I switched my 2012 back to petrol-based oil. It quietened the valves. I use a Ward's fan and watch the oil temps...never above 235 degrees F. I change often and my TriGlide keeps me happy.

When I took mine in for the 1,000 mile service last fall the dealer service manager didn't try to talk me out of synthetic but he made me aware that they have received some complaints about the noise with synthetic. I elected to go with the regular oil.

Service manager at my dealer told me to expect more valvetrain noise with synthetic... any synthetic. I use Mobil 1 20W50 V Twin as well, and notice a little noise, but changing regularly and often and I don't see (or hear) anything to worry about.

My 2010 Ultra Classic has had some valve train noise since day one. When I took it in for the 1000 mile service they put Harley's Sin3 full synthetic in it. The only difference is it changed the speed the noise is louder. I am staying with Syn3.

So you don't think it will hurt anything, that's good.

No I don't think it will hurt a thing, the funny thing about Harley's is no 2 sound the same when it comes to noises. I have a friend who has on 06 bagger with a 88" build with ported heads and SE204 cams. He's had me ride it a couple times to listen for a noise that bothers him. Every time I ride it, I hear valve train noise which is normal noise to me. You should hear my 06 Ultra with the bigger cams and roller rockers, it has a sound all its own when it comes to the valve train.

The trick is to learn what your bike or trike sounds like, and when it deviates from that then start looking for whats up.

I have 41,000 miles on my trike so that may have something to do with it.

Great advice Mike I do that with everthing. My wife is always on me in the car when I turn the radio down because I heard something. Even with bad hearing you get used to sounds your vehicles make.

I would suggest you do some reading on the heat tolerance of synthetic oil vs. standard. There is no comparison.

For an engine that is for the most part 'air cooled' I will tolerate some extra noise knowing my synthetic oil can handle the higher temps.

Very good pointe, you are right on and with the other recommendations to stay with the synthetic I am going to hang with the Mobile 1. Thanks to all.

22,000 and counting. It is a little noisier now than when I first switched to synth as 5000 mile service, but as M3 said, there are no 2 that really sound alike. I am a firm believer in that now, and as long as I get no new noises or difference in the ones I got, I am comfortable with it.
