M/C Road Map Sites

Cal,

You've found about the best website around.

The best ride reference I've found though, is the "Motorcycle Journeys through....." series of paperback books. I have planned literally hundreds of regional rides using their information. Amazon.com has them for less than $15 each and each time we decide to head into another region of the country, I order one.

Our travels are based on the things we want to see and experience rather than the roads that get us there and it's usually at the fuel and food stops that the locals fill us in on what we should see and where we should go.

Rarely do we stay on the planned routes. I still rely a lot on dead reckoning and an occasional glimpse at the Rand McNally, to get me where I want to go.

Perhaps we could get a ride exchange going on this site.

BT,

Being a retired Chef (and retired Navy Chief), I understand what you mean about trips and maps. I've always said a recipe is just a guideline to get you going. Ditto with maps and travel guides. And that follows through into my kayaking.

I take a "canned trip" and lay down the track on one of my many mapping programs then look to see what else is in the area. Before you know it you're going through some of the best unknown routes you've seen to date.

I think that's one of the reasons folks like to paddle with me - I take them places that they have been around their entire life but they couldn't find because it was so obvious.

I've used Motorcycle Roads & Trips - The Best US Motorcycle Rides & Routes for a while now to plan road trips. Are there any other free websites out there which provide info on great M/C road trips?

Calman

That is a good site, I have it bookmarked, but I find I use this site more often:

MotorcycleRoads.US

There are other sites, just enter 'Motorcycle Roads" in your search engine, but I keep coming back to the link above.

I started to GPS my rides all over Southwestern NH and Northcentral MA.
Did it all last Winter on my snowmobile and figured it would be great to
do on the bike also. Now I just wish it would STOP friggin raining here !
I believe it has rained the WHOLE month of June. I use 2 Garmin GPS's.
I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx that I use to track my route and just
carry it my tour-pak. I also use a Garmin Nuvi 500 attached to my bars.
